My stuff is in the mail as of monday.  I'm not going to fish full out fips yet simply because i am not experienced with all of it.  I want to get my feet wet.  Is this taking place on the main stem?

I have a few questions regarding these types of competitions. I read the F.M. rules but a few details I am not sure about. Are you allowed to bring and Use two rods, one Dry rig, one nymph rig? Do guys ever go after the surface feeders or is it all nymphing? Can you use dry/dropper? Do you have to tie ur own flies or can you use any barbless flies you want? I would love to give this a try but I would probably get distracted by the surface feeders and get sidetracked like a stubborn fool while everyone else is nailing em underneath. Is it totally hard core or is it kind of mellow like a local running race where all ages and talent levels compete for the sake of just getting out there and celebrating a good day of fishing, comradery and competition. I imagine its like a running race where the front runners are really gunning for the top spot while a handfull of stragglers are giving it there best but clearly not really vying for the top dog position. When I look at some of the #'s of trout that are caught I am amazed. I know I could ajust and focus solely on nymphing and get my numbers up but I would  hate to sign up for such an event and just get in the way. I know that this isn't a hard core national competition but what exactly is the atmosphere like?

You just about nailed it.  you will have a few of us that are pretty hard core and out there to win it.  we set them up for practice for bigger competitions for some of us.

Tactics is whatever it takes to catch fish in this one any flies are legal and lead is allowed unless you want to fish FIPS.

The best thing about the smaller competitions is the sharing of information I can grantee you will leave one of these a better angler.  Its a lot of fun and really not to serious.

Dropper dry is legal but you have to have a continuous leader.

Ted,

Mark kind of touched on it, but yes this is really a pretty mellow competition. There will be anglers of all different skill levels represented and some people vying for top position while others are taking it a little easier focusing more on learning and having a good time.  You can fish whatever style you want so that's not a problem. You can toss just dries or use lead and thingamabobbers if you want.  The great thing about this format is you get to fish then take a break and watch someone else compete which is a great learning experience and really cuts up the usual go-go-go-go-gohome pace of the bigger competitions.  There wasn't a single person last year who didn't have a great time and was ready to do it again next weekend.

If anyone is on the fence about it I say sign up. You'll have a great time, learn some techniques, and meet a good bunch of fly fishing nuts.

Guys are the beats set up yet? I may go out there and check it out. I see you can't fish the beats for 60 days prior but the surrounding areas are fair game I assume. I have a coupla long weekends and wouldn't mind getting aquainted w the area and giving it a trial. I am very tempted.

Ok here are the beats.

Clarion River from the conjunction of the East and West Branch to the New Over Pass bridge on the south side of Johnsonburgh.

East Branch Clarion Delayed Harvest Area (These will be set up different than the spring competition was.

Kinzua Creek Delayed Harvest

I will be scouting the area on Saturday & Sunday October 18th and 19th to decide on how the beast will be set up based on how the stocking was done.  Also on sunday I am planing on fishing in Bradford PA if anyone wants to meet up with me.

Ted Lutz and Mike Scarpo from Connecticut are in. We have never fished any comp before so if any other newbies are sitting on the fence jump in because you won't be the only rookies. Looking forward to fishing the Clarion and making some new fishing buddies while we figure out what competition is all about. sending chex in saturdays mail. Thanks.

That's awesome Ted!  You guys put us over the top so this baby is booked and going down rain or shine.

Please feel free to PM any of the guys on the team with ANY questions you may have.  Flies, techniques, gear... doesn't matter.  Our absolute main goal with these comps is to bring new guys like you and Mike into the competitive scene.  Ok, I'd be shitting you if I said there wasn't 1 or 2 secret flies we might not share... but seriously 99% of what we know or more we're willing to give away for free to support the sport!  All you have to do is ask.

Update:

We just had a withdraw from the comp roster and I only have  6 official registrations, so if something dramatic doesn't happen by this weekend we'll be changing the comp to a 1 day "minicomp" on that Saturday. In that case there would be no entry fee nor points awarded for the leader board.
