31st World Fly Fishing Championships
« on: July 17, 2011, 12:54:00 PM »
Looking through this rule modification document and noticed they are not using drogues. Anyone know why?
Quote
ARTICLE 10: BOAT FISHING COMPETITIONS
10.9. Add: Fishing will be from drifting boats. Drogues are not allowed. Two
competitors on one boat.

Also, this one is a little loco!
Quote
ARTICLE 22: CARE OF FISH CAUGHT
Add 22.4. In the exceptional case of a dispute regarding eligibility, a fish may be
killed, if it is necessary for evidence.

Dejon,

I am fairly sure the use of drogues is largely taboo outside of England and the Oceanias-I'm sure there are some exceptions but you'd better get used to fishing without one-lines REALLY matter then.

I also think killing a fish for dispute has been in the rules for some time--but I could be wrong.  Someone please correct me if I am.

"Fishing is allowed when the controller is rowing in case if the wind is still and the boat
does not move without rowing."

So if there is no wind you could just get your controller to row you around for 3 hours and troll the whole time?! How is that fly fishing?

No drogues - how do you control the bat and keep it from spinning around all day?

I feel really sorry for these controllers!

Dejon, it isn't uncommon to go without drogues during a loch-style fishing session (regardless of the host country). In fact they didn't use drogues during any of the sessions at Scotland's WFFC and the 2009 Commonwealths.

A well designed boat, such as the Klinkers on Loch Leven, drifts at ultra-slow speeds, even under fairly strong winds. In a calm or sheltered area they would barely move if a drogue were to be employed and in could become entangled on submerged snags in shallow water situations. The use of a drogue in these cases would restrict the drift speed and area, as well as fish, that can effectively covered during the drift. I was told by the coaches that I trained with in U.K. that they actually prefer a strong wind and faster paced drift, rather than being restricted by a drogue...

Matt, they definitely won't be trolling, as that practice is illegal. The concept is that in the case of a flat calm the occasional gusts of wind tend to come from a variety of directions, which can cause the boat to spiral or turn slightly, so in this case it is often necessary for the controller to man one or two of their oars, so the lines are kept straight and within each competitor's quadrant. Fishing outside the quadrant is still prohibited.

Killing a fish for the jury to inspect has been an ongoing practice for as long as I can remember. This rarely occurs, but occasionally happens when a competitor feels that there is a need to present his (or her) case to the sector judge or jury...

Exactly my thoughts Dejon! That's why open-discussion forums, such as this website, can be a real valuable resource for competitive anglers...
