Team USA Regional Application
« on: January 18, 2012, 02:54:41 PM »
http://www.ffteamusa.com/#!application

I am a little confused by the way this reads is getting into a regional going to be like a job interview now?  Maybe someone on the team can clarify.

From Fly Fishing Team USA's site:

"Please fill in the contact info below and fill the box which regional location you are applying to compete.

In the "Message" section please provide a brief description of your competition experience, event finishes and why you want to compete in this regional.

Each application will be reviewed and you will be notified of your acceptance into the regional and confirmed by receipt of your registration fees once accepted."

If we've already registered for a Regional, are we required to fill this out?  Yes, confused here too......

If you are already signed up and paid. You are good.

From what I have heard its for future comps, not previous release and filled ones.  I am assuming it is because they fill up so fast and comp angling is growing.  Until more regionals are possible, the few that there are available, having a application process will give an opportunity for all angler to sign up instead of the mad dash so if a 16 place nationals finisher wont be left out because they missed it by 30min. Again this is all hearsay but seems like it is the goal.

When I first started competing in 2006 we had to fill out the same application.

Hey Randy,

Quick question for ya, as I have not followed the team back that far... Who organized the comps?

Personally I have no issue with an “application process” especially with the speed that these comps are filling up with the current first come first serve basis… I would assume the application would be viewed as a method to select the best qualified field especially with limited Regional’s.

With that said… who/what decides a closed bank of applicants and the much larger question is, who will organize these competitions where the selection process is arbitrarily selected from a third party and the entry fees do not go to those hosting the competition???

The last question is more rhetorical in nature but would be interested in the size frequency and organization of the comps back when you started…

I have a few questions. How many regionals are held each year, and how many anglers do these accomodate?

I think the biggest problem going forward with competitive fly fishing, especially on the National level, is deciding who gets to compete. I don't think first come first serve is a good method, and I don't think an application process is going to be the end all solution either.

These types of selection methods simply cannot render the best possible anglers for those events. For mini competitions, and other non National events it isn't as much of an issue.

In order to truely produce the best team, you cannot limit the field to either a timed sign up method, or a biased application process. You need to have qualifiers that allow any willing angler to compete, or you need to set up a qualification process for the qualifiers whereby through other events throughout the year you earn that spot into a qualifier.

If this already happens, great. If not, I can see why it hasn't, but I think it needs to get there.

Good points here Kalvin. At the end of the day, it takes people and money to run a good comp. I am sure guidance will be forthcoming.
