US Nationals
« on: May 16, 2011, 10:42:39 AM »
Not too far away now. I know many competitors are on site, or on their way.  With a 60 competitor Gold level field there will be a big 3000pts up for grabs to 1st place on the TroutLegend Leader Board.  This is a substantial purse and will mean big moves for a handful of anglers - with the possibility of one or two overtaking Top Rod.  Of course, if Devin Olsen continues his pace we'll all but be able to print out the top accolade now.

And according to the pt standings on their facebook page there is the potential for many new competitors on the US National team.

Can any of you guys down there give us some updates on the water/fishing?

The only update I can give is that my basement sits at a cool 65 degrees with a slight odor of earth since the only fly activity I have seen is the small gnat that is living in my basement that keeps landing on my vice as I try to get the boxes filled up for this week.

Been pre fishing off and on since i got back from the Team USA Youth clinic in State College.  Fishing is pretty good.  Today was cold and overcast and fish were down a bit.  Although fish are still being caught.  I went out today with Nick Johnson and Dell Neighbors to fish the Lower Nantahala.  Saw Randy, Devin Olsen, Lance Egan, and Kolanda pre fishing.  They seemed to be poking a few fish as well.

We found some bugs today that were hands down better than other bugs of similar sizes and other colors.  Not sure it will matter any by the comp but whatever.

Water condition is great.  two of the venues are dam controlled but they are at "normal" levels.  Bugs are coming off steadily and fish seemed to be pulled up and eating nicely.

I fished the practice lake last week and it was fair.  Put several in the boat.

I am spearheading a filming project with some buddies to get this thing shot on film.  So although i wont see it until editing/post we should have some good footage of the event.

Still waiting on results. Tremendous amount of fish being caught. One session was won with 44 fish, second had 37 on the Upper Nantahala.  Even saw Coach Bobby Knight with Anthony Naranja last night.

Just got back from judging all three days and I'm beat. All 3 streams were outstanding and produced fish. As with anything, some beats were much better than others. The Tuck is an awesome river with lots of shoals, plunge pools and deep runs. Lots of choices for techniques. The upper Nan produced a lot of fish and had a lot of skinny water and deep pools as well. The lower Nan is similar to the Upper except you have to deal with the daily generation flow since it is a tailwater. Ravens fork was well stocked and there were a lot of fish over 44 cm. I know one of the US guys caught a 51 cm fish from there. That stream has 25"+ fish in it. Ravens has skinny water and really deep pools. Hopefully everyone enjoyed themselves. I know I learned a lot from all the guys I judged and as usual the competitors were class acts.

Sounds like a great experience Pat.  I'll bet you picked up a lot of tricks being able to watch that group for 3 days straight.

Awards dinner will be happening bout' now, so we should have results in a few hours.

Had a great time at nationals.  Got to meet some great people especially all of the trout legend family that was here. Even met a girl who got her picture in a recent issue of The Drake. But she pays 10 dollars for her copy. Mark Hanes had a pleasure talking with you. Pat Weiss congrats on making the team. Missed seeing Dejon and Brandon Matthews, but maybe next time.

I will list the final results for all five sessions as soon as I can.
It was a great Nationals, and congrads to all who fished.

I would like to thank all the volunteers, we had 97 that worked their tails off. Your help was greatly appreciated.

Give me a few days to re-coupe and I will list the scores.

Again, thanks to all that competed and volunteered.

Thanks for all your hard work Larry!  As we all know, without folks like yourself and a tremendous volunteer effort, none of this happens.

It was great to be a part of this.  Tremendous experience and my hat is off to Larry for getting the volunteers and support needed to make this thing happen.  I learned a lot, and met some great folks.  It was great to put some faces with names as well.
