1st day of the cup has ended.  Good numbers of fish were caught on all 5 venues... especially the lake with 1 boat crushing over 50 fish.  The weather has cooperated and a handful of 50cm beasts were landed.

Day 2 tomorrow!

WOW! What a great competition, organization and superb venue for a competition! I highly recommend that you consider attending next year's event if you weren't at this year's events, as this is one that shouldn't be missed.

For me, the greatest reward wasn't the actual competition itself nor the end results, but rather the socializing and good times that we shared on the bus rides and during the loch-style fishing sessions, as well as the opportunity to learn a few new techniques and tactics while making some new friends along the way...

I'll definitely be back for next year's competition! :)

I had a few inquires about the flies and techniques for the cup.  I dont expect everyone to share but Ill give you a run down of how my weekend went.  I finished 19th so take my story with a grain of salt.

I arrived late and only pre fished (the blue) for about 40 minutes before the comp.  i relied heavily on my team for recon.

Day one AM-lower blue
I was excited to get the blue first. I know it can fish like shit after pressure and did not mind getting it fresh.  I had a nice beat with mixed pocket water and runs.  I started off up the bank with some nymphs.  I am a skinny edge water type of guy and my recon told me fish were on small midges so i ran some small flies right off.  Stayed out of the water.  I worked up the edge with nothing.  Hit some A looking pocket water....nothing.  It was then that I saw some big stonefly shucks so i went to the golden turd with a smallish olive dropper.  Worked back up the bank and into some laminar riffle water.  Nothing but i did turn two.  one lifting, one swinging.  Check.  Fish are on the swing.  I suspected a hatch of something would be coming off and i was right.....caddis.  I stuck a couple on the nymph rig but had beat up alot of the river left water and was halfway through the session.  I crossed to the other side and found some risers.  picked them off with a small grey caddis and a dandruff fly.  up to 4 fish.  I then worked up through some heavyish water targeting rocks that were a little larger than the rest on the bottom.  Stuck and scored a nice 54 cm brown here.  up to 5.  At this point the sun came out so i revisited the pocket water....nothing.  I continued focusing on the other bank and scored some fish that put me 5th in the session.  I watched Anthony pick up huge rainbow on a dry that all but straightened his hook....nerve racking....but he landed it.

Day one pm-upper blue.
I looked at my sheet annd thought i was following an angler that I knew would not cross.  In hindsight i had the wrong sheet and was actually fishing behind Finlayson.  Anyway.  It was raining and crappy and i saw fish rising below me like mad in the other beat.  My beat was one big shoot and run so i knew that it would be tough.  I fished the single dry from the bank for quite a while with nothing but short fish eating it.  I swtiched to a dry dropper and lost a tank of a rainbow after trying to horse it out of the other kids beat.  I was hesitant to cross because i had only one edge to work and knew it would blow my water.  After only scoring one or two i went to the other side.  It was brutal but I had to do it.  I went up the other side one time very thorough.  I knew that if i beat the water up it would put them down.  It was a very short beat so i set up camp alternating from dry to light nymphs to heavy nymphs each few steps up.  I stuck lots of short fish.  I crossed up high to save the lower part which was the best looking water.  with 20 minutes left I deep nymphed and picked up a huge brown and another rainbow.  Good for another 5th place.  I was happy pulling any fish from that beat.  It blanked alot of people that weekend.

day two am sylvan lake
I had some good recon from that night and had my team of flies ready to go.  I started with a type 3 which was a mistake.  I fought that for a while untill my "your a dumbass" meter kicked in and i switched to the intermediate.  I lost the one money fly that was working.  but do to the weather (rain, wind, hail,) i stayed with small streamers up high.  I caught alot of fish on the roly poly, and anything stripped fast.  I scored 16 to take another 5th place.  In hindsight the type 3 cost me big time.  lesson learned.  I fished a small orange bugger, a black comorant, and another fly from a team mate.  Lots of fish on the hang.....which is always fun

day two pm-colorado
One of our team guys watched a guy do well on the colorado and he said he stayed down and that his flies never made a splash....check.  small bugs and stealth.  I went into my beat double nymphing the skinny water right on the bank from my knees.  I pulled 5 fish.  I knew they would go down with pressure and the fishing was quite tough up high so i worked slow and french nymphed all the skinny stuff.  a size 16 baron (thanks loren) did the trick.  Broke alot of flies off on the bottom but i just re tied and stayed low.  I tried deep nymphing but it produced nothing.  I did catch one fish in the last 5 minutes swinging two wets.  I may have been able to produce more with that technique....not sure though. This was good for another 5th place.  Numbers were WAY lower than that morning.  So i knew pressure was getting to them.

last day sylvan lake-
My guys gave me the flies and the line (type 2) and told me the retrieve (fast).  They said i would crush fish everywhere.  After fishing with Dzifa for an hour i had no fish and he had 1 or 2.  I realized that the weather was bluebird compared to when my team mates fished it. I saw Anthony and his partner sticking fish and saw Anthony throwing a blue line.....check.......airflo type 5.  I switched to it and got fish early and late in my retrieve.  This told me that I was too deep but since i was getting bumped on the hang i thought they were maybe on the vertical presentation......wrong.  After 30 minutes of that I switched back to the intermediate and caught a few.  We bounced around and spyed other boats.  nobody seemed to be doing anything spectacular.  With only 10 minutes left I switched to the type 5 again and went to the middle of the lake where a big pine tree was blocking the wind and creating two wind lines.  The only thing i had not down was deep.  I fished down deep (25 seconds) and pulled two buzzer beater fish in.  I scored 4 which put me down in 7th place.  I heard Marek got 2nd with 9 fish.  I then found out that Charlie Card from wyoming won with 23 fish.  This shocked me.  To go from 23 fish at first to 9 for second really impressed me.  I spoke with him at length about what he did.  What i learned was he fished an intermed the whole time and fished very slowly.  I should have known the bluebird skies would dictate a slower retrieve but was going on recon from my guys.  Most of the field me included was fishing retrieves that were too fast. Which in hindsight was gathered that morning when the weather was much different.  Charlie talked to me at length about the balance of his flies on his leader and fishing the drop.  I can tell you with certainty that I was out fished and commend Charlie for whipping our ass up there.  I learned more on that single lake session than i have in long time.  And i want to thank charlie for hanging on the bus and bullcrapping about fishing all weekend.

All in all it was a great comp.  I never won any sessions but i hung in there and pulled out a top 20.  I fished hard and tried to really work slow and fish light bugs.  I had to fish single flies alot once pressure went up.  I learned alot and was pleased that conistency paid off.  19th wasnt what i was going for but with mediocre lake sessions i was happy in the long run.  Dejon was on my bus and can tell you that he did not have good beats everytime, or much at all, but he did do his thing and stayed on top throughout much of the comp.  Nothing drastic....no crazy michael phelps swims......just solid, well thought, efficient fishing.  I commend him on his medal.  He certainly deserved it.  I hope to go back next year and will be much better prepared to take some wins on the lake sessions.
