TEAM NC update(s)!
« on: December 13, 2010, 10:31:09 AM »
2011 is shaping up to be a great year for Team NC. We have elected our new officers and brought in 6 new members. We had a practice this past saturday and had 98% of the team make the practice. We welcomed in our new officers and members and went straight into some brit army style fishing. Let me just say the new guys are gonna be tough to beat. TONS of potential. Im super excited about our team and the 2011 comp scene. Our goals are to have great finishes in the upcoming comps and work with Project healing waters as well as all our other volunteer duties and non profit status. Stay tuned for updates on some exciting new sponsors and comps!!!!!!

Kevin:

When you select new team members do you take beginner fly-fishers as well or you work only with well established fly-fishers? I am just wondering.

Cheers,
Janos from Manitoba

Janos,
In previous years we have always selected seasoned anglers.
We do have one fellow who is not new by any means to trout fishing, just fishing with a fly rod. He has shown one of the fastest uptakes to the sport than anyone I have ever seen or had the pleasure of fishing with.

Janos,
We take anglers of all skill set. We look for people who want to learn new techniques and have a desire to comp fish. Some of our newest members are not new to fly fishing just to to the comp flyfishing scene.

Janos, I had the pleasure of picking some anglers for the team this year.  Ill elaborate on kevins comment below.  The reason i picked some of those guys was becasue they were fishy, modest, and hard working.  They listened and knew if it meant swimming the river they would swim the river. I think being fishy and having work ethic are key along with dedication.  There were 2 young guys that approached me about getting on but they were ego maniacs.  They didnt make it.  One of the guys sent me an email that said he would essentially come to every event and practice for 2 years to make the team.  I knew he meant it so I gave him a shot.  He is already a solid stick, but that showed me he was ready to put his fishing where his mouth was.....looking forward to the future with the new and old guys.

After working with the guys just one day I saw crazy improvement.  We had practice the next day and they jumped in and never missed a beat.....

Thanks for the comments; it was great to hear about your experience.

Our team (a team from Manitoba) is very new at the competition scene but we are following similar principals you do. I believe in “local” (state or provincial) teams, I think that is the only way to overcome the barrier of geography. Willingness to learn and taking competition seriously are the key elements for our team members.

Thanks again.

Hello Team NC.

I have another question about your team. In my understanding you have many team members on your team. Before a next competition, how do you decide who will be on the team, who will represent NC, let’s say at the next regional or National competition? Will you have a mini competition for your team members and based on the results you will decide on the 5-6 team members. Or the team executive decides who will be on the team for that completion based on previous performance.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Janos from Winnipeg

Janos that depends.  We only have a few comps that require a team selection, such as the cup.  For  that we have a points system.

Smaller indvidual or two mans we do a first come basis.  For example I opened registration for the upcomimg qual to the team the same time as everyone else.  This ensures its fair and we dont have a stacked comp.

Not everyone on the team competes.  We have team tiers, secretaries, and a host of other support  roles so the number of competitors to pick from isnt huge.

I understand, thanks for the info Paul. I guess with our team is little bit different, we only come together to compete on the Nationals, so if I find more than 5 people, I just enter them individually into the competition.

How is the fishing in your area at Christmas time? I was in Murphy two years ago; I am hoping to go back there in the next 2-3 years.

Thanks,
Janos

Fishing is fair around X-Mas.  Right now anything thats not a tailwater is slower.  Water temps are in the mid 30-s so you fish accordingly.  But there is a host of tailwaters that fish year round in the area.  Muphy has the hiawassee river.  it fishes year round.

Yes, I heard about the Hiawassee River, but my information told me 2 years ago, in the winter time everything is very slow. For sure, couple of nights were freezing, but the day time was 50-55 F. My kids did not understand why we do not need winter coats, they saw only white Christmas, and freezing temperatures for 6 months over here. Anyway, one day we will be back.

What are the best months(s) for fishing over there? I assume that in the summer time everything slows down, and it is too warm.

How far ahead do you plan a competition? Are the competitions open for everyone?

Thanks,
Janos

Just want to say I'm very excited and honored about being a new member of the NC team.  This group of anglers is rich with knowledge, because of this I stand to gain a wealth of knowledge and experience. I look forward to being a part of the competitive circuit and exchanging tactics and bouncing ideas off everyone.  Tight lines everyone and ill see you on the water!!
