Stimulators as indicators
« on: March 05, 2011, 12:09:03 PM »
Greetings all,
How many of you employ a sunken spinner 18"-24" off the back of an indicator fly during a spinner fall?   I'm thinking about fishing this rig exclusively this year.  I'm tying the majority of my spent wing spinners with a little bit of lead under the thorax.   Here's one of my indie flies.  Olive and Amber on size 6 light wire salmon.

jamie,
i never tried this , is it effective ? I know i have trouble seeing those small flys in the dark. Mybe this would help solve the problem.

Jim,
I'm kind of treating it like a hopper/dropper.  My theory is that the larger fish are too lazy to rise completely through the water column unless they can take mouthfuls of BWO's, Trico's or something huge like ISO's, Drakes (Various), etc.  I figure with the Olive (Dark) body, you could pass it for any of the drakes except for the Greens and that smaller spinners, like sulphurs, cahills, etc will be sunk behind it.  Not sure if it's accurate. I tie these in 8,10 & 12 as well. Mark didn't like it one bit and told me I'll catch a sucker with this method. Ha! What the heck?  If it works, I'm genius.  If it doesn't, I go back to throwing floaters.  Something to pursue anyways.

Jamie/Jim,

This is 100% how I fish spinners...Has been for years. I always sink my spinners and instead of putting it behind a stimi...I put it behind a hatch specific dry....Ex...if theres a sulphur spinner fall. I put a dry sulphur on and drop the sunken spinner off of that. throw two flies that the fish have been seeing. I normally get 90% of my takes on the spinner but the dry has caught me some fish.

But yeah this method works dude...you will love it trust me!

all the best!

It's all about angles. A good angle creates a good presentation which in turn puts more fish in the net.

I do the same thing, but use a heavy wet fly hook for weight.  I don't like to use lead or the metalized dubbing.  This is my spinner:

I usually fish this as a dropper in a nymph rig towards evening; it kills.

John Barr is also a big fan of fishing sunk spinners.  It makes a great deal of sense.

Alain,

That sunken spinner looks great!  I like the idea of using the heavy hook for weight keeping the body one wrap of biot.  Fishing late evening spinner falls became one of my favorite things, that is, once a stogie smoking old timer clued me into what was happening.  Gave me one of his ties, promised me a fish on the first cast. No joke first cast fish on - he walked away with a knowing smirk.
