Rich
The work you are doing with the youth is great I would hate to see you leave the sport because of the money at a Fips event. I don't think that Fips would ever adopt a for money world championships.
I do agree somewhat that it brings out the worst. But I have seen first hand that cheating does go on in Fips Tournaments I have seen it in the Regionals.  But it's a few that give anything a bad name. It would take time to weed out the chronic cheaters if it could be done at all. It is tuff to police.

Rich absolutely it can bring out the worst, how to combat the cheating?  Easier said than done but it's having controllers/judges that know the Fips rules and enforce them. Again, easier said than done as more times than not it's difficult getting enough controllers to cover an entire event.  I've had controllers who've checked every one of my flies fly after a caught fish and some that didn't bat an eye at how the fish was hooked when landed.  I would have no idea how to ensure the judges are knowledgable to the rules and that they actually make the anglers follow them during their heats but I assume that would be a good start.

I dont want to undercut the many comp anglers that do follow the rules.  I know a lot of guys that'd rather not win vs win by cheating.

The ride home from a comp with a new fly rod, gear, and a little cash always brings a smile but it's not why I personally compete.  Getting to fish with some of the top tier competitive anglers in our country and hopefully giving them a run for their "money" brings far more satisfaction to me than some loot.  To each his own of course.

Competitor controlled events are the easiest solution here.
