Central NY FF Series in the Works
« on: December 26, 2011, 08:07:57 PM »
Hope everyone has had a great holiday. Here is what is in the works for events in the Central NY Region.  The point of this post is to get the word out sooner than later in terms of dates.

April 22 (confirmed TL Bronze event)
Chittenango Creek

June 2-3
Nine Mile Creek, Chittenango Creek, West Canada Creek, TBD

July 14-15
Nine Mile Creek, Chittenango Creek, West Canada Creek, TBD

Aug 26
TBD

More Details to come as I get every detail nailed down, beat sectors, practice etc.  It is my hope to get some of the non local TL community up to 1 of the 2 day events this summer to check out some of the water and abundance of WILD fish we have to offer here.  I know Nine Mile Creek is going to raise a lot of excitement for anyone who has ever fished there.

I am also working with Loren Williams (http://www.flyguysoutfitting.com/) on a Saturday Clinic April 21st and August 25th.  Again details to come.

Thank you to Chris Smith, Bill Steudler, Kalvin Kolaz, Loren Williams and Dejon on all their help and guidance on putting these together.  I am very excited to get these up and running and make these yearly events.

I will be in touch with you and Chris if anything comes up.  I learned a lot from watching how the SF Classic was run.  You guys put on some solid events down there and best of all a lot of them.  It is my hope to get down for one or two of the 2 day events down there a year.  More comps = more experience and if you read Kalvin's post you know where I am going with this.

Still to be explored for comp possibilities are Adirondack and Catskill Regions... but must crawl before I run.

I am excited to say that we have been given access to NY's famed Salmon River's first 2 miles of water which is part of the Douglaston Salmon Run.  DSR for short.  This will be 1 of the venues for our July event!

This venue will feature wild and stock browns, wild rainbows, fall fish as score able resident fish.  There is a chance you will get an ass kicking from an Atlantic Salmon or Summer Run Steelhead as well but these fish will not score and we will require any of these fish to be broken off as nothing less than a 7# will land one of these hot summer fish.

DSR is the place to fish for the Fall Run of Chinook and Coho Salmon and the fall/winter/spring run of Steelhead.

I am definitely in if we are gonna fish the DSR. Jason takes really good care of the the river down there. And you can get into some really nice browns(big points). Please keep updates going.

Mark,
Purely for the safety of these prized fish.  We will be fishing much to light to handle a Steelhead or Atlantic salmon in this river system.

It is the size of the venue I am after.  Big water venues.

Jason just moved at the beginning of the year.  Garrett has taken over and so far seems like he will fill Jason shoes nicely.  It will give us 2 BIG WATER venues for the July event and 2 smaller stream venues.

That is simply not true Mark.  It is up to the organizers as to which species will be on the list of scoreable fish.  In Sweden, Baltic Salmon were present but did not count.  A number of anglers, including Pete E. indeed hook and landed salmon that could not score.

I recommended  to Ken that fallfish be scored for a few reasons: 1) if the water is warm these fish may be all that some anglers catch 2) I happen to feel that they are pretty good imitations of EU grayling in how they behave, bite, and fight.

I am all for fallfish since they do act similar smaller trout.  I enjoy fishing for them when the trout fishing goes south in some of my area streams.

Correct,  Loren mentioned I should investigate fall fish as they are present in SR and behave much like grayling.  I have done my research and decided to allow them.  DSR may or may not stock this year but there are enough browns, rainbows and fall fish to make the venue work.  Again it is the SIZE of the venue I am after.  So far this is what I am proposing to DSR who has a VERY strict NO KILL policy on TROUT and Altantic Salmon:

Fish that will score:
All browns
All rainbows
Fall Fish

Fish that will NOT score
Skamania Steelhead (bright silver, almost translucent this time of year)
Altanic Salmon (bright silver and very pronounced spots)
You will know if you hook one of these as you will be into your backing and out of your beat in about half a second.

Fall Fish are similar to trout, they are a different species but live in same water, feed and act the same.  I have never caught Greyling but Loren has and he compares them very closely to them.  Salmon River has a good population of them.

You guys probably know I am a fallfish junky.  They are superb gamefish.  I would not say they behave exactly as trout however.  They are far easier to catch and are a shoal fish, so they stay in groups.  Early in the year when trout move in to riffles, fallfish tend to stay in slack water, but there is overlap.  They spawn in the spring.  In the summer, fallfish tend to get in the riffles, while trout may drop in to refuges.  A lot depends on water temperature, like everything else in fishing.  There are many places in CT where in August you could stand in one spot in current and catch fallfish all day non-stop on nymphs.  They are a great training fish.  In a comp setting, you might score 50 fish or more I would guess.  My friends that pike fish also say they make excellent ice fishing bait.
