11ft 4wt CZN?
« on: January 10, 2011, 04:06:33 PM »
Noticed this was a new one in the catalogue. Anyone pulled the trigger on this one yet? If so how does it compare with the others in the series?

Intersting it may be worth the look at that price point the CZN's are a great rod for the price.  For just polish nymhing that might be the a great choice.

I saw that rod in the Fly Fishing catalog. I have the 3wt and 5wt CZNs, 'great rods, hard to beat at the $200 price. I'm very curious about the 11 footer, how it measures up (no pun) vs my 11' 4wt Echo.

The 11' 4 CZN is a fair bit softer than the 11' echo.  Definitely a great stick for extra reach.

Definitely more light tippet friendly, but since it is softer it will likely track slower and therefore be a bit less accurate.

Sounds like a good Czech/Polish Nymphing stick.  I will have to get my hands on one and post a full review on here.

It looks like Cabelas has not up-dated their site. There are quite a few things shown in their 2011 FF catalog but they're not on the site. Also, I tried to order a 10' 6wt Echo Ion rod and was told they won't have them "until the spring"........ I guess I'll go to e-pay and buy one (with free shipping).

I really think you might see cabellas offering alot of cheaper high quality sticks from now on . They are gonna be a big player in the fly fishing market . You might as a consumer even see a day real soon where they have barbless fly fishing hooks too ! keep up the good work Lance !!

Jim brings up a good point, it looks like Cabela's has been making moves toward a wider market for several years but has picked up the pace dramatically recently. Not only have they started selling on e-bay (many items w/free shipping), but they have expanded offerings from companies like Sage and now Winston and Simms, obviously aimed at a more up-scale consumer. They have offered relatively high quality rods and reels under their own name (and now a Lamson-made reel that's promoted as being made especially for Cabela's) for many years. I agree with Jim that this will likely be expanded. I'm guessing that maybe they're looking to be a one-stop place for flyfisherman to shop for all their needs, time will tell. But I also believe there is still plenty of room for specialty shops to sell less mainstream products.

I'm looking forward to giving this rod a go.  I really like the 3wt and it's found a home in my river bag.   The 4&5 were a little too fast for my style, but a softer 11ft might be just the ticket.

Dejon,

If softer is what you want, that is the rod for you.  Don't get me wrong, it isn't super soft, but it is noticably softer than the 10 footers.

I have been thinking about getting in the czech rods.  I have thought about getting the CZN.  Would it better to start off with the 10' 4# or the 11' 4#?  I currently have a TFO 9' 5# and it is great all around round, but what something more specific.  Heck, when I make the decision, maybe I will even go and pick it up from Lance.

I have the 11ft CZN in route. Stay tuned for a couple cents.

Ryan, I'd head over to the shop and bounce a few of the rods.  See what feels right in the hand.  I feel the 10ft 4wt CZN is more on par with the stiff power of the Z-Axis 10ft 4wt.  The 9.5ft 3wt CZN is completely different - nice and soft throughout - my favorite of the three.  I'm hoping the 11footer will tend toward that full flex of the 3wt.

So then is a softer rod better for the euro style of nymphing?

This is ALL personal prefrence. Some of the rods that others like I think are way to stiff but than the rods I like most people say are way to soft. I use a Hardy Marksman Drifter 11' 5wt (the 5wt part is extremely decieving) and I think that rod along with the Greys Streamflex 10' 3wt are about as good as it gets. Greys has out some new rods I'm want to try as well though especially the 10ft 2wt.

I can cast long leaders with these rods very acuratly but soft rods are what I've been using since I started Euro nymphing. I also have differnet needs from my rods than most on here, being able to send a 10in fish flying into the net is of no use to me but being able to protect a light tippet on a larger fish is.

So I'd say try out a friends, go to a fly shop or a show and try them out and see whats best for you.

I'm looking forward to checking out the new Hardy and other rods at the Somerset show. I'll be there Fri & Sat since I only live a few miles away.
One of the new Hardy rods I've already seen is the 5wt 9 1/2' / 10' rod. It's a 9 1/2' with a 6" extension that fits between the first and second sections and is neatly stored in the reel seat when not is use. I believe Echo has something similar.
I'm going to be a kid in a candy store......

Just unpacked the CZN 11ft 4wt.  My initial though was it's incredibly light in the hand and well balanced for a rod of this length.  Action wise it's much more on par with the flex of the 3wt.  I'd go so far as to say the 9.5 and 11 footers are in a category their own compared to the 10ft versions.  This rod will most certainly have a slower set point than the Echo as Lance mentioned, but if extended reach and protecting light tippet are high on your list this one should warrant a close look.

I'm excited to test it out, but probably won't be able to give it a go until I'm back from St.Croix in the first week of Feb.
