Will you be using a very long leader? If so, just get a cheap fly line or running line. Alot of folks on this forum when they fish this style don't even have fly line out.  I on the other hand use fly line and a shorter leader, I just ordered SA GPX WF3F, it's overrated by 1/2 line size, should work good.

When I took the class with G.D. it was sponsered by S.A., and we all got sharkskins.  I myself have to agree with him after using it for a few months- it is the shit.  But, he also works some flyline, as do I.  10 feet to the sighter is the setup he was using.  That's what I have found to be the most comfortable for me.  So after tippet, I may have a total of like 15 feet.  So, yes, a line is important to me, especially because I like to... GASP... fish dries to rising fish, and that makes an easy transition.  If you are just using a straight mono setup, I think John is right on with the running line; but I think it limits you, unless all you do is euro fish.  I've run the gamut of lines, and I can't get but a year out of any of them.  I'll let you know how the sharkskin holds up.

I would just stick to a running line like John suggested, euro style typically involves no fly line coming out of the rod tip.  The leader you are using is more of a factor than your fly line will ever be.  If your leader can't turn over your not going to catch fish.

But, as bill said, if all you are planning to do is euro nymph, thats the perfect setup.  A thin, level, running line and lots of maxima.

I have my euro setup strung up with the atlantic salmon leader.  For euro nymphing only, I like it.  Do you like the saltwater better than the salmon leader?  Why?  Just pickin your brain.  Is it Fluro?  I need a magic button that changes my leader when I change techniques!

Thanks for all the help everyone! Ill go with a running line it sounds like a good option as I dont expect to be using very much of the flyline.

mark and Jim,

I would recommend it, I start my butt section with 25lb for light nymphs.  30lb if I will be fishing heavier flies. Its mono and actually really cheap.  I use it for leaders where I will be doing tight casting on fishing creek for example.  I have only used the salmon leader a few times and did not like it at all.  Its nice because its knot-less but there are much better knot-less leaders available that are specifically made for euro style.

I'll offer this since we're on the topic of leaders now, take any of the many leader formulas out there and use it as a starting point. Then play with the leader and see what works for you. When I first started long leader nymphing I used 2 body lenghts of 20lb Maxima (I like Ultragreen, its the stiffest of all the Maximas), 1 body length of 15 Maxima, sighter, tippet. I used this setup for quite sometime, but changed it many times since then to suit my own needs. I now harldy ever use the same leader setup twice. My latest leader setup I used allowed me to switch between Euro nymphing and indicator nymphing very quickly. Every person is different, every rod responds different, every river is going to need something different.

I personally like having flyline and most of my leaders now have some flyline out of the rod tip. I like the versatilty that having fly line offers, also I just like the feel of fly line in my hand better than mono. As far as a good fly line, I like GPX and the Cortland lines but really all the new premium lines are nice.

This is one of those FWIW suggestions, but the fly line that has come to be the standard for almost all my nymph/dry/wet fly fishing is the Cortland Sylk. Not a rugged line, but it has a "stiffness" and narrow diameter that makes it the perfect multi-purpose line. The only knock against it is that it doesn't float very high--but it's a minor issue under most conditions.

I use a 3wt DT on my Grey's Streamflex 10' 3wt, and on an older 9' 3wt Sage VPS-Light.

Something else to keep in mind for you guys in PA. If you run strait mono you will not be able to fish the fly fishing only sections.

Actually from the end of your tippet to your fly line can only be 18' max.

Has anyone actually ever seen anyone ticketed for this proposed offense?  Nick, just poking fun mate... purely at the system not the player  ;D

I mean seriously think about it: "ok sir, you're leader looks a little long there. can you hold this tape measure? yeah, just step on it there. thanx. ok, i'm going to walk back here.  ok, yeah, that's 17.5feet.  but let's look at this fly line. is this actually a fly line? was it labeled as such in the package? yeah, because it looks more like thick mono so that would be part of your tippet/leader and i'd have to ticket you... but if you can produce a retail package saying this was actually manufactured as a fly line then you'd be ok.......um sir, this is obviously a piece of paper with a terrible picture of a fly that your friend just scribbled......  fail.

I have fished leaders longer than 18'.  Its a rule but I know my local conservation officer is more concerned with poacher and littering in my local fly only area.  Hell he gets guys using bait in the area every year.

I think you are ok for the most part as long as you use some fly line.  I personally use 20' or less or at least try to.

I actually never seen them ticket anyone in PA, for anything.

I agree its kinda a silly rule but I wouldn't want to see someone get a ticket for it.

I've heard of guys getting tickets in the Fly Zone on the SR for it. Their is is similar but I think its 15'.

I will often throw longer than usual casts while nymphing regardless of my leader combination which is anorexic compared to most.  I tend to be a minimalist when it comes to leaders, out of both ignorance and preference, alot can be done by simply playing with tippet length.  Anywho, I often underline my rods 1 weight size, as for style, it just that, style. WF, DT, level try them and see what you like. As for brands, Im partial to Rio.
