E-Z Fighting Butt for Euro Style; 5/8in leg tip
« on: August 07, 2011, 11:51:19 AM »

Don't laugh, this works!  I revealed this to my friends a couple years ago, and we have used it on and off since then.  You will want to buy 5/8in leg tips from a hardware store.  The tips slide on and off easily and leave no residue.  This is an easy way to convert your reel seat in to a functional fighting butt.  It also keeps the rings from loosening up.  The slight weight from the butt alters the balance in the rod, but the alteration is usually beneficial in my opinion.  Finally, having the rubber cap prevention on your reel seat lets you place the rod vertical and not worry about damaging the hardware.

The other thread about the Hanak French nymph rod with the fighting butt reminded me to make this post.

Give it a try.

Sorry to change the subject, but is that rod a cabelas czn and if so what weight is it and how do you like it.  It is hard to pass that rod up for the money.  Awesome idea for the butt especially since it can be removed when you want.

Great tip Alain.  I'll be putting that on my Lowes run list asap.  Have you ever found anything we could use underneath to further extend the extension?

Cool looking idea. What is a leg tip for normally?

Thanks all, it looks and sounds silly, but works very well.

Bob:  A leg tip is used to protect your floor from chair legs.

Dejon: No easy way to make a longer extension, but all of my reel seats have enough length to make this system work as a fighting butt.  I like to lock the fighting butt against my inner wrist.  The black tips are harder to find at the big box stores.  I found mine at an Ace Hardware.

Brett: Good eye on the rod, yes it is a Cabela's CZN 9.5ft 3wt.  This is THE best nymphing value out there.  For small to medium streams, I really don't need much else.  I got mine at super deep discount around the holiday, for less than $100.  It is not the lightest or the best made, but the slow progressive action (may not be the official action name) is wonderful for casting and sensitivity.  Not many people know, but this rod is also an AWESOME short range (<40ft) dry fly rod, when paired with a proper, custom leader.  The rod's action is similar to the French-made rods I use.

I have one of the CZN  3wts and I think it's a terrfic rod, a super value for the money. I got mine on a sale last winter, I think I paid $129. I've heard several negative comments on the CZNs and I don't understand why.

I enjoy fishing the 4wt I have just noticed some issue with breakage on them but for the money they are great rods!  I still need to get my hands on the the 9'6" 3wt that is by far the best rod in the series.

thanks for you response Alain, Dave and Mark.  I just purchased a 10ft 4 weight czn with the wlx reel.  The reel is awesome and am still trying to figure out a good line/leader setup for the rod.  Do you have any suggetions for size of leader. I wish you could buy it with the fighting butt but Alain your idea solves that problem.

I agree Dave about the negative comments on the rod.  The only thing I guess people hate about it is it is made overseas and sold by a big box store.  I am not a big fan of cabelas (mainly because of high shipping costs on small orders) but it is nice that they keep prices reasonable for good quality fly fishing equipment.

Is it ok that I add one more mod to the fighting butt! You can stack up nickles in it to fine tune your balance!

Roy,

Thanks!  That is an excellent addition.  Good idea!
