Lake Rods
« on: October 04, 2011, 10:15:57 PM »
I am looking to up my game on lake fishing and i need to start with a new rod. I have been fishing a 9' 7wt and i know that a good majority of you all fish longer rods than 9 foot in a variety of weights for the extra distance,,,etc! I usually fish a Z Axis but was wondering what rods you guys have been using and what you like or dislike about any of them.

I love the action of my 7-weight ZAXIS and prefer a 10 foot rod as it affords me the option and ability to space my flies further apart than I could if I were only using a 9 foot rod.

Agreed.  10 footers seem to be the best of both worlds.

I use 6wts.  A Sage Fli and TFO Pro.

A 10ft 7wt is a must, the extra length keeps the flies further from the boat so not to scare the fish on the hang, also when you fish the hang the extra length will help you set the hook especially when you are letting you booby float up to the surface. Finally what Todd said about spacing of the fly is so important. Now the reason for a 7wt is for distance, the further you cast the longer your flies are in the water and the 7wt will help you turn over a booby on the point and two lures alot easier. I am using the new Echo 3, just love that new rod.

I use an Amundson Wind Warrior 10-foot 6 weight (sometimes 7 weight).  The others all make the great points about why the 10-foot rod is an advantage.

Going with a Sage though is pretty tough to argue against.  They make a fine product.
