Nets
« on: August 30, 2009, 05:08:40 PM »
What do you guys use/like?

I bought the S2 net that so many anglers have because I thought it must have been the shit.  I think it's pretty decent - it's light weight, and has the multiple handle lengths for river and longer for lake... 48inch max.

However, after quite a bit of use I do not think the net or the frame diameter are optimal.  I find that the hard rubber net and almost inch thick frame both pick up major drag in the water and restrict you from a cool clean sweep of a fish.  I've since sold my S2, but regret not having it in the arsenal... maybe just because I'm a gear junkie:)  Using 2 Frabil nets now.

Also, what kind of strategy do you use for holding and utilizing your net.  I noticed some top team usa members always keep their net in hand while river fishing - it's always ready to go.  I find it hard to effectively do a ot of the things that I do like holding myself up on rocks:)  I did start to just keep the net ready all the time though in a few of my river beats - instead of fumbling to get it on and off the magnet all the time - which always seems to take up a bit of time.

I'm working on some "proprietary" net holding ideas that I'll be happy to share in November:)

I bought  a fancy brodin gost net.  I like it but i had an issue in a comp with it.  2 scorable (barely 20 cm) fish slipped out of the holes in the net.  I didnt think an 8 inch fish would fit through it but i was very much wrong.  The guy that won it only had a few more fish than me so it  hurt me.  I still use it.  I find it interesting that the us guys hold there net all the time.  dont think i could do it.  I use my 2nd hand to take in slack line to keep a tight choke when dry dropper fishing and with other stuff.  I have since relocated my net release to my side under my arm.  the net stays down and out the way but can be taken off or put back very quickly with one hand.  It worked good till today when i broke the realease.  I will have to figure something new out.  I notice alot of team usa guys use floppy mesh nets alot.  And they score fish with them still in the net so they dont lose them.  i had a judge one time that insisted on being ever so ginger with the fish and taking FOREVER to score them, like he was afraid to touch them.  Im very easy on fish but when its comp time its measure, dump, and go.

Which Frabil nets are you using?  I need a new bigger net soon.  I am tired of fighting to get anything over 20 in my net!

but this one would be good for big fish hunting:

Like Bourcq, I've had issues with smaller fish slipping through the gaps in the Brodin Tailwater.  Add to it the increased surface area of the bag and the hoop, and it's pretty much become my trophy water net, where pretty pictures count.

I fished with an S2 Triangler for the first time this weekend and liked it.  I did have issues with the handle (it's tacky like a tennis racket) catching/dragging as I pulled it out.  I had it wedged between my fishpond fanny pack and my back.

I'll give those Frabill's a look.  Many thanks for the link.

The ego medium and large nets are really nice for steelie.  Even the large is light as a feather to carry on your back.

I ordered both of the Frabills the other directly from the Frabill site.

Received them both in short order in great condition and man are they nice!  Light and huge.  Even came with a nice thank you letter!

The handle is very comfortable and the netting seems durable as well.

Thanks for suggesting these Dejon!

Good deal!  I think they really are one of the most affordable and best suited river comp. nets on the market today.

Now if I could just find that expandable handle collapsible net model they had at Gander for some time then we'd have a nice cheap alternative for lakes too!

Not bad.  Not bad.  Not too fond of the net though.  Dangit.  Wish I could remember what model net that one was.  I was going to scoop one up and then they were gone.  I thought it was a frabil, but I don't see it on their site.

Jeeesh.  That wasn't too hard.  Did a search for "frabill folding net" and found it right off!  Not sure what I was doing wrong before.

This is the lake Net I scoped out in the store and would highly recommend to any comp. angler (obviously not field tested).  It extends beyond the Fips-Mouch 4ft max rule, so you could use a piece of tape to mark the 48inch spot.  I think this is more than sufficient for the amount of time most of us "State Side" competition guys spend on lakes. If however you spend more than say 30% of your time on lakes I might look for something a bit more sturdy.  It folds up nice and neat for travel too!

Dejon dont know if you've tried this. secure your net magnet with a tie wrap dead centre on the top of your net in line with the handle , dont have too much play on the magnet on your back .click every time no fumbling around losing precious time
