Travel Bags
« on: October 19, 2011, 08:37:58 AM »
I have to get my gear to the comp. So I am looking for a travel bag to take on airplane it needs to be strong and hold weight up to 40 pounds and needs to hold 3 rod tubes and a over size net too. And wet waders too on the way home. What our some of you on the TL board have? Thanks

Hi Allen,

I have the large Sage rolling duffel and it works great, Cabala's also has a nice rolling duffel for sale. The Sage duffel has a top and a bottom compartment with the bottom one vented for wet items.  I always take a few trash bags along to put the waders, knee pads and boots in for the trip home.  For the rods I would buy a single rod tube that will hold 4-5 rods; you are able to Carry it on the plan.  The tube also works well to carry your rods to the comp water during the tournament.  I have the Sage 39 inch long by 4 inch diameter case; it held my 11 foot grays plus 3 other rods and I could have put a 5th in no problem when I went to the A Cup.  I would recommend carrying on the plane, your rods, reels, and flies.

Good Luck

Mystic Wet Fly bag.

I have the large one. It carries 6 rod tubes.  Has a water tight wader compartment that fits both my waders and boots.   The main compartment is huge.  I've had mine for about 3 years.  It's been to Panama, Costa Rica, and about 15 other states.   It's still going strong.  No tears, no holes, no rips.  It doesn't have rollers, but that's not an issue for me. I think the smaller one holds 4 rods.   The price is right as well.

I use a 20$ drab green duffel bag and a garbage bag for wet stuff.  And I cover it extensively with duct tape.  Looks like a piece of junk and definitely doesn't say "fly fishing gear", so I doubt anyone ever thinks about stealing it.  Fits a human body.

I'm with D on the economy aspect.

I purchased this one (black with rollers) at TJ Maxx (a discount clothing store) for $30.00.  It will hold 2 rod tubes , my pack, waders, boots, a large frabill net, and backup clothing stored in gallon size zip lock bags.

It's been to the America Cup, Nationals, etc.  Very sturdy construction.

The Simms Bottomless Pit is a great bag. I have had it for 8 years or so and had it all over the world beat to death. It still looks great!
