adding tags
« on: October 25, 2011, 02:31:50 PM »
hey guys..probably a very newbie question, but i'm pretty new to the game so i guess it fits.
what system or knot do you guys use for adding a tag? my partner and i both lost fish in the rumble
due to a break at the knot where we add the tag.

thanks in advance..

I use the double surgeons for adding droppers/tags.  Extremely reliable.

I second the double surgeons.  When time is very limited, however , and the fish are small , other knots my be just fine.

The water knot is basically the same as the double or triple surgeons, but in the context of loch style fishing most references use it to tie a shorter piece of tippet material to the main leader stem rather than joining multiple pieces of tippet to create tags. Doing it this way allows a break to happen (usually) at the tag without taking the rest of your cast with it. Nothing's bullet proof, but it works about 8 times out of ten in the case of a break-off or snag (probably even better if you can get away with using a lighter tippet for the tag).

Works for me, but your mileage may vary.

I've been using a triple surgeons with no issues. I try to keep a single piece of tippet running from the leader down to the bottom fly. I just tie in a tag with a triple surgeons about 25 inches above. We didn't break off a single fish the entire Rumble and we used 5x and 6x. The last fish that broke off was the 30" brown on the Nantahala during generation and the knot held, and I was fishing 6x. I think his teeth cut through the tag.

I will typically use the Orvis Tippet knot as it has a 99% knot strength when properly tied.  It is basically a double surgeons knot except that when you form the loop, you just go around that loop one time before pulling the tags through twice.

This knot has served me well over the years!!!

Here is a link to reference when learning to tie it http://www.bluequillangler.com/Knowledge/Knots  It is the last one on the page

Hope this helps!!!!
