next will be rod length limits etc etc. maybe the powers to be want everyone using the same set up and same method to make it a game were there are no handicaps if you will

Indeed, but by a frightening margin:

Quote
the 5 main items of the newly proposed ones were finally not approved, by 11 votes to 8 (19 member countries were present in total).

It was a close vote. I just find it strange that so many countries would want the proposed changes. It does seem to target certain countries techniques but you would think the losing countries would adopt the techniques that keep beating them and adjust and embrace what works.

To answer Lance's question regarding limiting leader length, I also would not have a problem with that. I think at around 20' you have really maxed out the effectivness of any leader system. There are some small diameter fly lines in development by Cortland that will provide a highly sensitive setup, similar to an all mono setup, which seems to be the target with that rule proposal. I bet line manufactures would jump on board with smaller and smaller diameter coated fly lines if that rule ever carries.

Do you guys think it's prudent to make rules that are primarily left up to the competitor to follow (ie, hard to impossible for controllers to monitor)?

Any guesses on what countries might be pushing this leader length and strait leader agenda?

I think we can pretty much count out the French,Czech, and the Spanish.

I have used more than 20' but I am usually not more than 25' so that would be easy for me to modify.

I have and use from time to time a Cortland Deep Nymphing Line which is really just a small diameter running line it is great for long lining since it shoots much better.  I am not sure if i can make it comp legal unless i start my leader with a smaller diameter as well but I will have to play with it more this year I guess.

Simplification wouldnt be bad.  Rules that a contoller could easily understand would be good.  Just the mere mention of some of the rules that we have turn people off from both participating and controlling.
