Hemostat Knot Tying Demonstration Video
« on: February 07, 2011, 12:52:48 AM »
I thought I'd share a short, knot tying demonstration/video that might be useful for some of you. The knots in my video are variations of two knots that are commonly used for fly fishing...

Top-notch.  That process always speeds up the Surgeon's knot for me.

Nice one Todd.

Excellent movie, thank you.  Something we could use this time of year!

I have seen the Czech team coach make the Triple Surgeon's that way, but he wraps the loop around his finger tip.

My only worry is that fragile mono might get nicked by the metal tool.  I guess it would pay to smooth out the jaws with emery cloth.

Thanks!

Nice video Todd, it looks like the surgeon's knot would save time on the water. The more time we save on tying knots the more time we have fishing. Great importance in a comp.

Thanks Todd. I will have to learn that technique.

It's all about angles. A good angle creates a good presentation which in turn puts more fish in the net.

Outstanding video. That will come in real handy for the triple surgeon's knot. Can't wait to try it out. Thanks.

Alain, what I have done is that I have a seperate pair of hemostats where I've taken heat shrink tubing, covered the jaws/clamps, and heated them to mold onto the jaws so that are permanently on there.  It essentially makes them rubber tipped.  This gives them a very gentle touch with even the finest tippet.

Chris: that's an excellent tip, thanks!  I have some heat shrink and will give it a try.  This is also a good tip for my hackle pliers.  Thanks again.

My only worry is that fragile mono might get nicked by the metal tool.

For practise and competitions I normally use a pair of Dr. Slick's "Half Smooth & Half Striated" hemostats, and have never had an issue with nicked tippets, as you're gently grasping the tippet when you pull it through the loops.

After you've practiced and perfected this knot you'll find that you can use striated hemostats just as effectively and without fear of nicking the tippet. Just use a bit of caution and refrain from clamping down too hard...

Todd thanks for this!  I unfortunately have poor circulation which makes knot tying in the winter brutal.  I really like that it just uses hemostats a simple standard tool that is always easily accessible and you don't have to carry and find any extra crap.  Will practice and use.
