Missing fish with Eruo style
« on: April 19, 2010, 10:47:39 PM »
I have a question about missing alot of fish.

I'm really working on the Euro thing but I'm missing alot of fish. Since I've started the fishing the euro style I have catch alot more fish but i'm missing alot too. Is this normal or is something wrong?

Seth,

Could you elaborate a little? Are you missing takes all together? And if so how do you know? Are you getting bumps and not hooking up? Are you hooking fish but "bouncing" them soon after? Are you hooking fish, but losing them somewhere near the net? Etc...

Seth it could be your reaction times are still slow. If your used to dry fly fishing it could be tough to not let the fish take the flies. The second you see your sighter move try to throw that fish over your shoulder!

It also helps to use those pricey hooks we all love so much. The Skalkas, Knapek, TMC spbls, Dohikus and all the other pricey barbless hooks bury themselves deep with very little effort.

I'd bet that you aren't in touch with the nymphs enough.  Be sure to maintain all of the slack in the system.  When you lead the flies, try to find that line where you are almost starting to drag them downstream, but not quite.  That's a good starting point anyway.  Once you get on to it, you may want to vary the lead speed occasionally.

Remember: don't think of the sighter as a floating indicator and; you're not really going for a drag free drift anymore.

Try that before you buy expensive hooks.  Or, you could ask Nick to buy the expensive hooks for you.   :P

Enjoy the day.

I was loosing some fish also . I t was about 5 seconds after the hook up. Found out that I was setting the hook straight up instead of into the fish.  That helped me alot.

Seth,

A few questions need to be answered before a proper evaluation can be provided:

Are you missing the takes or losing the fish after they have been hooked?
Are you experiencing this with smallish trout; larger fish; or both?
How do you normally perform a hook-set?
Can you provide an accurate description of your fly rod and leader setup?
What sort of hooks and patterns are you using?

Guy's thank you for the input.

Sorry about the not enough detail in my first post, my computer was going dead.

I'm fishing a 9ft. fast action rod.
About 18ft. leader with with pink and gold curly sighter.
6x tippet from the sighter
As for flies barbless Czech (weighted), size 8 soft hackle with hot head bead tied on scud hook (weighted) and size 18-20 midge.
These are the patterens I used this past weekend on the Davidson River here in Brevard NC.
I've been fishing two flies most of the time but sometime three.

The problem:

I have never missed as many fish in the past as I have here recently. The fish are ranging in size that I seem to be missing. I'm not having a problem with the larger fish (16in and above). I think most of my lost fish are coming off of the smaller flies, not the Czech's or larger flies.
Most are missed when setting the hook. I tend to set the hook in a soft manner. When I see the sighter move I set the hook and feel the fish then they come off. Sometime it is also on the flies way down after cast. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. One thing I think it could be I'm not weighting flies enough and I'm still having some slack in the line.

With all that being said I'm still catching more fish, so this is not that bad of problem. I just want to land more as many fish as I can. one last thing is I'm fishing like I'm always in a comp. now. I pick a section of water and fish it for two hours just as I would in a comp.

As I think Nick mentioned above you may want to try "setting those fish over your shoulder" for session or two.  Everytime you see a slight hesitation in the curly set briskly and restart your drift.  This happens to contradict what I'm about to write in another thread, but non the less it will be a good training exercise to see if you're not driving your initial hook set deep and thus immediately or soon after "bouncing" or losing those fish.  If you think it's the smaller midge hooks what kind are you using? Is there sufficient hook gap? If they are barbless - tie up a few identical patterns but on barbed hooks and see what happens.  All of this amounts to narrowing down the scope to find out exactly what or who is losing your fish.

When you set on a fish make sure to keep even tension throughout the battle. If you have to switch angles do it methodically and watch that rod tip.  I've seen many long time anglers who don't pay enough attention to this element of fish battle.

Just a few ideas.

Seth,

I see you're using an 18 foot leader, but how much of that rig is below the sighter.

Whenever I get out of my comfort range and start missing fish, I'll shorten something up.

See you this weekend!

Most are missed when setting the hook.

Then you're probably setting late, so I still think that you're probably not in touch as much as you need to be.

Honestly, problems are usually best solved with a simple solution.  Keep the slack out of the system.

Enjoy the day.

I see you said you set the hook in a soft manner. Try setting the hook harder, the curly absorbs a good bit of shock. Also remember hook sets are free, if you think you might have a fish just set it. I personally lost a fish this past weekend cause my sighter barely moved, I thought it was stuck on some moss. I lifted the rod and saw the fish shake off. Guess I need to listen to myself.
