Mono line for indicators/sighters
« on: January 07, 2012, 04:36:26 PM »
Hello everyone,

I am in the process of getting myself ready for the commonwealths in Tazmania in February.  I have been doing a lot of research on line about different lines for making indicators and sighters. I would like to hear what all of you prefer to use(brand, lb test, diameter, colour,etc.).  I would like to know What lines are best, what ones to stay away from.  I have found a line called sunline Siglon ff ( hi vis yellow) and sunline Siglon f ( hi vis orange and pink).  Has anyone used these lines for coils or drop sighters? They are used as a floating mainline for centerpinners and float fisherman. I am looking to order something Monday so I have time to experiment and tie up some indicators/sighters before I leave. Any info/advise is greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has any tips about tazzie, I would love to hear them.

Tight lines,
Morgan Thorp

Hey Morgan. Sighters can be like shoes. Everyone has there favorites . I would recomend jan siman bicolor strike indicator in what ever size fits your leader. I have the .035 and .020. You can also look at suffix and stren gold in 8 and 10 lb.

I have some of the Siglon right here:

I give it a grade of B for drop indicators, but only a C for coiled sighters.  It does float well, but it is a limp formula meant for coming off smoothly from a centerpin spool.  The limpness prevents it from making long-lasting coils.  The colors are not as bright as the Siman.

With all this said, however, I would just go to a big box sporting goods store and look at all the monos there.  You want something cheap and bright for a coiled sighter.  Something with a lot of memory, like Ande.

It is best to make coiled sighters and let them sit for a long time before use.

Thanx for the input guys. I was worried about the limpness of the sunline. I have checked all the box stores on Vancouver island for cheap bright stuff. Nobody carries anything smaller than 20lb.  Sean, do you know where I can order jan's stuff online?  I have researched the Stren and suffix, they are my fall back. Another one I am wondering about is the berkley sensation. It comes in blaze orange and solar green. Has anyone used this stuff?  Thanx again for the input.

Morg

http://shop.siman.cz/

http://www.wflies.com/

both sell the Siman bicolor.  It runs out of stock all the time.  The most commonly used size is probably the 0.35mm.

Good luck!

Another site that also sales the bi-colour indicator mono is bluequillangler.com. Also czechnymph.com sells the Hanak bicolour indicator mono but its a fair bit pricy.

Morg,

I use the Siglin F 6# (.009") for the final section of my sighter (.012" Cortland bicolor is the upper section) and am very pleased with it.  I think indicator mono is in it's early stages of development so keep your eyes and ears open.

As for Tassie.....watch out for the freaking Tiger snakes and white-arsed spiders.....DO NOT drink the water and BE SURE you have Bangers n mash.  Do you know what venues you are fishing?  Many of their highland lagoons are weedy brown trout haunts where dry flies can be very important, especially the yellow gum beetle and Highland Dun.  I did well static fishing nymphs on a floater just above the weeds and in the opening among the weeds.  One thing the Kiwis taught me was to pull buggers through the weeds aggressively with HIDi line.  It worked to a degree but was not fun.

Rivers were pretty straight forward.

I use Hanak Bicolor it is very limp and stretchy.  I do like it.  the jan siman is stiffer. i find that the hanak kills some of your energy as your loop turns over so fishing the dry is tougher unless your leader is agressive.  I have not tried the cortland yet.  If i had something in between the hanak and the jan siman i would be happy

Thanx for the input guys!  Loren, the venues are: arthurs lake, woods lake, little pine lagoon, south esk river and the meander river. I'll watch out for the snakes. I'll have to try the bangers and mash there and see how it compares to the bangers and mash in the Uk. I spent some time over in wales and England this fall doing some loch style training with some friends off the welsh, English and Scottish national teams. I pretty much survived on bangers and mash, well that and beer. Lol.
Has anyone heard anything about or tried the new berkley trilene sensation?  It comes in blaze orange and solar mint. 10lb(0.011) 12lb(0.013)

Lots of people use the Berkley solar green.  I think Steve Parrott recommends it in his DVD.

The problem with all these materials is that they look good on the spool, but not necessarily in a single strand.  Many of them are sort of dyed on the outside only.  The Siman Bicolor is actually tinted all the way through.  I believe Siman tints the material over a solid white base.

Another bicolor that may be the same as Siman is available here from Edgardo Dona's store in Italy:
http://www.flytiersworld.com
This site also sells it in a spool.

I have said this before, but if you buy bicolor in the little packets and intend to use it in competition, you are better off winding it on an old tippet spool.  It is hard to get out of the packet when you are in a rush.  I buy about 4 packages at a time, knot them together, and wind it on an old Maxima spool.  I then put a Rio tippet tamer on the spool, the kind with the brass grommet.

The only other material I have seen that duplicates the Siman effect is JMC DTK.  DTK comes in solid white, orange and yellow.  DTK is an excellent sighter material, it is available via European web-sites like pecheur.com.

Yes Morgan but the bangers we had in Tasmania were made from kangaroo. The only venue we fished on your list was Little Pine. It's how Loren described it.
