What do you listen to right before a beat/fishing?

Many serious comp. anglers these days are taking notes from fighters,  entering into a deep concentrated mode and trance by listening to an Ipod right before their beat.  When the top echelon is defined regularly by mere seconds or centimeters it is the resolute angler who wins the day!

What is your music inspiration?

Personally, RATM (Rage Against The Machine) never fails to put me into a winning mood!  Worked for the Matrix Soundtrack!

Black Label Society! Best damn band in the world.

Can't argue with Pantera either. Nothing makes me want stomp some faces like Cowboys from Hell.

I must admit that fishing with the Rock for the last few years has softened my hatred of radio friendly country.  I might even stop the dial to  listen to a little RascalFlats or Darius Rucker, but tell anyone and I'll say you're a liar!!!

If my trip involves a long(ish) drive, usually the radio is either playing something jammy or bluegrassy. You can't beat some live moe. to get into your head. Sometimes I'll get a hankering for some early 90's grunge and "alternative" (the REAL alternative, before alternative became mainstream).

When I'm fishing, I would never want to wear an Ipod, the sound of the surroundings is what I want to hear.

I own a Buick Century to make my 130 mile round trip commute to work everyday. But I did keep the Silverado for my hunting and fishing trips, although I told my wife that is for chores and yardwork. When I am in the truck, the Tragically Hip is usually blaring.

Nice selection of tunes all around - good to see Iron Maiden, Pantera and another country fan

I do agree with Adam that I wouldn't wear an ipod on the water, there are way too many beautiful sites and sounds to take in.

I agree whole heartily - I wouldn't want to listen to music on the water.  Just en route!  There was a moment yesterday when I was about 3 miles into a deep hike on the Catt and there were no roads or bridges or buildings or signs in site anywhere!  Just the a cloudy sun and rushing water.  Chicken soup for the soul!

I listen mainly to County and Classic Rock.  I am really not a big music guy to be honest all i need to get hyped is to see the water.

Before comp, I like to listen to Rage as well, but I find myself selecting specific songs from most artists, Like cemetery gates doesn't get me jacked, but Broken from Pantera does.  Slayer would probably work, and I do like to hear some Linkin Park in there.  Disturbed.

Just chillin afterward or on a recon trip, I would say Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, They Might be Giants, The Refreshments, John Denver, or any more organic type or quirky rock.

Nice Thread. I am a person who gets easily fired up over simple stuff. I have just gone through my old CD's and put a bunch of them into iTunes - Rage, Alice in Chains and Dokken Beast of the East

I lost hundreds of CD's in college. So I just ordered some oldy but goody replacements like Iron Maiden Number of the Beast, Toadies Rubberneck - you can get CD's ridiculously cheap on Amazon.

I also ordered Black Label Society Skullage as per word of Black Label. Admittedly, I never listened to them before but BL has never steered me wrong with fishing advice and is obviously a huge proponent of this band. I love Pantera so figured I'd give it a try.

When the girls take a nap this afternoon, I am going to start a nice heavy playlist for the iPod - Man, I need to get out and on the water ;D

well now this is an interesting thread. DJ your original question is very interesting and the way the thread shifted is interesting in a different way.  I have never fished competitively but I have been in many competitions.  Everyone is different and needs to find what works for them.  I have a tendency to become "over ready" or ready too early and not be able to sleep if I listen to enthralling music the night before.  So that has turned me to some Taoist music to listen to as I meditate on walking through deep green fern forests... down to every detail... what does it smell like?  is it warm and sticky or cool and a little damp?  You get the idea.  Sometimes I am too excited and the competition will creep in to my head...if I can not stop it I will try to do a little Tai Chi as the concentration on the movements focus me away from the event in the AM...If you are not ready for a competition the night before you will not be ready in the morning so "cramming" will not help.  After a good nights sleep shortly before a competition I will listen to something enthralling as you all commented on.  I put a play list together that will start slowly ...a lot of my lists start with Paul Weller "Brand New Day" or the live version of Matt Good "Champions of Nothing" then into something harder  then harder still until I have to go in to the competition.
As for music on my way to going plain ol' fishin I listen to John Butler trio a lot, The Hip, The Lowest of the Low (big shock there right?), or some early 80 alt rock... The Jam, The Smiths, The Clash, etc.
As for fishing with the Ipod on?  Or course I prefer to take in the natural sounds but I have fished with my old shuffle on a few times and it was pretty good.  The locations were where the natural sounds are not all that great.  When I would fish a little ditch in Avery Co. NC that runs 10 feet from a busy road I would wear it to drown out the traffic and it was much nicer.

AA: I am a huge fan of BLS. Its Zakk Wylde's band. Zakk has been the lead guitarist for Ozzy for the past 20 years so that should tell you what kind of music it is. Hope you enjoy them.

haa sweet thread..  i typically get pumped to whatever is playing on NPR (Prairie Home Companion, This American Life, Fresh Air) also i only have one tape in my car of this awesome prog/metal/ambient band from Chicago called Ga'an.  They will definitely get you pumped to battle some monster fish, and possibly some dragons and evil wizards.

Black Label Society - In This River (Live)

Maybe one day I too will have a sweet Zakk beard.

Im with you on this one ive been meditating for two years now and alot of the time before i fish ill meditate for ten minutes to calm myself down . if im not felling it im into punk or something fast it get me going ,but that can be dangerous cause i dont concentrate as well when im hyped and i have found myself moving to fast through a run at times

I religiously listen to Brad Paisley's "I'm gonna miss her" (AKA; "The Fishing Song") when I drive to one stillwater tournament. It's a humourous song that gets me relaxed and smiling, which can help to eliminate those "butterflies" that are commonly associated with comps...

If it is a river session... I prefer something a little faster (U2 seems to do it for me). Also... I find that "The Eye of a Tiger" (Rocky's theme song) is a great song for getting your blood pumping (used to always listen to prior to my kick-boxing matches), but then again - a can of Red Bull will help to accomplish the same mission...
