Rules?
« on: November 01, 2011, 08:13:19 AM »
I was looking around on you tube and i saw a competition where the competitors were using strike indicators like thingambobbers. Are all the competitions listed on the circuit schedule straight up fips mouche rules?

Yes, almost all are to date.  We've been thinking about doing some "hybrid" comps and allowing split shot, indicators, etc to get more people involved though.

Oh okay. I saw some videos on you tube that confused me about the rules. Thanks Dejon!

I'm not meaning this to sound snobby, but fishing with strike indicators seems so cheesy to me now. It's amazing how much my eyes have been opened in the last year of comp fishing. I pretty much use comp techniques all the time now. The only time I don't is when small stream fishing and then I'm using a dry dropper or nymphing. Again, no disrespect to people who use indicators, it's just the way it feels to me now.

I started practicing at the south holston on my trip there. i rigged up fips mouche on our second to last day and i killed fish i think i did even better than when i was using indicators. i still use them a little because i am still developing really heavy flies so i won`t have to fish indicators and shot. Going to the nanthala to practice fips mouche techniques. Will post how it goes.

Pat, I think many of us go through the same progression.  Stowing non-comp techniques can really help bring you up to speed in the first couple years. However, I will admit I love using a thingamabobber and splitshot when the water dictates and I'm just out having fun.

Dejon, I don't think I'll go back to split and bobbers, but I do miss casting a fly line sometimes. I'm in the process of starting to get some lake lines so that should fill that void for me. Thanks by the way for the advice on lake lines at the Rumble. Who knows though, what I'll be doing in a couple of years.

There are circumstances where an indicator of some sort is indespensible, and there are certainly ways to design flies that will pass the FIPS test.  I think we've posted pics of a few in the past.
