Hello and Welcome Robbie!!! I look forward to hearing about your adventures and reading some of your advice on techniques and tactics!

It was nice to see you in Drymen, Scotland. I only wish that these sort of events allowed more time for socializing and getting to know each other a little better!

By the way... I love your truck!  Here's a photo that I took of a friend of mine, that was trying to hire your service - but unfortunately you were nowhere to be found... ;)

Hi There,

Thanks for the welcome chaps. Most Kind.

Todd is was great to bump into you and Mac in Drymen.

You are very right on one point that there never seems enough time for socialising.

The days at these events just seem to fly past. I know the organisers of these events have a lot on their plate but perhaps a BBQ or something should be compulsory. Every Competitor who attends gets 50 Fish points... :-)

Thanks for posting that photo as it certainly brought a smile to my face.
The reason you could not find me....I was in the bar with the Czechs!

If anyone has any question about fishing over here just fire away.

I am probably better at the theory than the practice but I may have something to offer.

Best Regards

robbie

Robbie!!!

Drinking and fishing?  I dont know what you are talking about...

However, I do remember an old saying by Green Bay Packer great wide receiver Max Mcgee : "When it's third-and-10," McGee once said, "you can take the milk drinkers and I'll take the whiskey drinkers every time."

Me thinks  drinking to excess the night before a big comp is never a good idea---hilariously Mcgee did it the night before the Super Bowl!  lol

p.s. the Portuguese alternate and control themselves at their Nationals each year...

cheers

Ah Pete,

How I long to have witnessed the experiences you have.  Someday.  But I did get to see Sam break a sauna in Sweden! ;)

Here's to learning-as much as possible as often as possible!

Hi There,

Pete you are of course right. Excess drinking before a competition is a definite no-no.

There are a few exceptions like your football player. Another was a friend of mine who needed eight pints of beer just to wet his whistle.
His name was Brian Leadbetter who a few of you will have heard of.

Of course we are all different. However on a serious note the night before a comp I like to have a nice meal and a couple of beers and just relax. Some people like to be tying flies until the early hours but my way of thinking is if you are not ready by the evening before you have not prepared well. The important thing though is to do what works for you. The ability to relax though is definitely a tool worth considering.  :-)

Hi Loren.

Best Regards

I definitely fall into that camp!  I'm all ready a nervous wreck when it comes to competitions so it's nice to settle down and put things into perspective.  Of course, I haven't won Gold yet, so maybe I should stay up late tying flies, checking knots, rechecking gear.

Hi Loren,

Ahhh the infamous Sweden sauna episode...I was a few rooms down the hall at the time, but I heard all about it....

speaking of staying up late at night tying flies for a comp!  As the team fly-tier I dont remember if you slept at all during that trip Loren! I owe you big man...you tied me some sweet redtags!

agreed Robbie,  While I dont usually drink during the actual comp days, especially if the team has agreed not to, I do like to get a lot of sleep the night before competing in a big event.  many rookie Worlds competitors nervously tie flies all night long...that is a worse mistake than getting hammered drunk the night before you compete if you ask me!

I know for a fact that the top teams in the world drink a little during the comps...and much too much after  :o

it's my theory that each competitor must prepare themselves in the way that is best for themselves...the proof is always in the results....the guys on TeamUSA that dont drink at all are some of the most talented anglers in the country and post strong individual results consistently...so to each their own, is probably the best way to approach the whole drinking issue...
