Did anyone notice the rule modification for the upcoming World's in Slovenia. Here it is:

"Change 27.1. A single leader may be used. Only during river fishing, the leader may not be longer
than double the length of the rod with which the leader is used, up to a maximum overall length of
the leader of eighteen feet / five hundred and fifty centimeters (measured from fly line to the point
fly)."

These rule changes in the World's seem to forecast what may become standard for FIPS comps in the future. I just found this interesting and applicable to this discussion.

I did not see that: gut punch.

We may have to consider developing a set of TroutLegend League Rules adapted to suit our specific needs and concerns shortly.

Gut punch not intended!

So, should we continue to allow the long leader in the US comps? I see some people down here using this setup exclusively.

When they amend/change/disregard/introduce rules on the world level, there is clearly a conversation that takes place as to why, why not. Does anyone know why they have eliminated long leader tactics for that event?

They have a yearly meeting which took place in Rome last year. I think this was voted on and no real changes were made to the official FIPS document to outlaw the long leader setup. I'm not sure why the organizers choose to ban them in this tournament. Possibly a first step towards banning them in this years meeting? Or, just a one time deal. Who knows?

I do not know the rationale behind the modification, however if we had a world comp and had beats on the Paradise section of Spring Creek (for example) then leaders could not be longer than 18-feet on those beats, regardless of what FIPS rules are.  I do believe local regulations supersede FIPS rules, and I guess, can be amended to meet FIPS rules if local officials OK it.

Perhaps the owners of the comp water have those regulations in place?

That's very possible. The trophy water in Cherokee has a maximum leader length, I believe. It could be a local regulation.

Another rule mod for this years Worlds is single fly only on the river venues. I bet that is a local reg. as well.

Chris,

Yes, Slovenia and Austria are well known for a single fly only tradition in many locations.  Makes for an interesting twist.

What I love about competition, along with all the great dudes and dudettes, wonderful water, horrific and appealing cuisine; is the constant need for adapting.  I may get stumped at the actual competition, but I take that home and invariably get to another level because of it.

I can definitely see one learning very fast competiting in competitions with varying rules comp to comp. Ultimately it will make you the most well rounded angler, if you can or can't do this or that.

Do they record the anual meeting, or provide a record of the minutes? I'm very curious as to their discussion about wide ranging rules changes/introductions. I can appreciate local regulations being a priority, I think the background of what goes into these rules in general is interesting.

Aha, hadn't considered it was probably a local reg.  That piece fits the puzzle.

I have a related topic that I'll start in a new thread.

It is definitely a "local thing" - much like how the rules were ammended to allow the competitors to fish from anchored boats and with single flies when Canada hosted the WFFC in British Columbia, where the use of dropper flies is illegal.

Just curious as to why the rules only allow for one loop in a leader set up.  I assume that this means that a competitor cannot attach flies with a lefty loop or perfection loop if there is a loop to loop connection between the flyline and leader (or does a loop to loop connection count as two loops?)

We've wondered too and it's been the topic of debate at times.

I believe the general consensus was you can have 1 loop at your flyline/leader connection... no where else.
