9th Canadian Fly Fishing Championships
« on: October 18, 2010, 10:39:23 AM »
We are pleased to announce that the 9th Canadian Fly Fishing Championships will be held October 17-22, 2011.

The competition will be held near Montebello, PQ at Fairmont Kenauk. If you have never been to Kenauk, it is a beautiful spot that you won't want to miss at that time of the year. With approximately 100 square miles of wilderness, the "fishing is normally fast and furious that time of year" according to FFC President Randy Taylor.

The second FFC Competition (2004) was held at this location.

For more information about Kenauk, visit: http://www.fairmont.com/kenauk

More information about the competition will be published as details become available.

Sounds nice.  I'll have to see if I can venture out for that one, but I can't be certain right now.  Depends on how much stuff I do through the year.

It's nice to have a full year notice though!

Don't know yet but Graham fished in the 2004 Nationals so he might have some intel. We are fishing it in a couple weeks, and I am hoping to fish as much as I can before it ice's up, since it so close to the Cabin.

If I remember correctly there are about 10-20 lakes located on the Kenauk reserve so knowing which lakes they are going to pick maybe difficult though there are only a few with the size and access neccessary to hold a comp on.

Kenauk is about 40 - 50 KM from Baroux (Mt. Tremblant)...the lakes are very similar and so are the fish - rainbows and brookies.

I must agree with Arron Baroux or any of the outfitters in the area are the same in the way you fish them.

Okay, Jeremiah...

We'll need a cottage for at least 7 (5 competitors + 2 support staff). Preferably on a nearby lake. Must have: BBQ; jacuzzi and/or sauna; gas appliances in kitchen; two V-hull 12' boats with trailers, 9.9 outboards and 50lb thrust electrics; large party/flytying room with full spectrum fluorescents and plugs for tying lights (room should have at least a beer fridge or wet bar); sound system; satellite TV; wireless high-speed Internet; and a very mess tolerant maid service.

Bonus points for a nearby depaneur with a quality selection of local microbrews, a well stocked SAQ with a good whiskey selection, and a rip snorting Brasserie with pool tables and good moules et frites.

...and we can only pay $1000 per week, so see what you can come up with.

Aaron

Well here is what I could come up with on short notice, a wood shed behind my father in-laws cabin. It will sleep 4 comfortably the other 3 I can lone you my tent, its one of those canvass ones, with just a bit of mold on the walls and only 3 leaks but its big enough that you can sleep around the leaks. As far as the BBQ I'll lean two shovels on the shed so you can dig your self a fire pit. I have something better then a jacuzzi there is a spring fed river just down the hill, I could get my dog to swim just above you guys if you want bubbles. Still working on the boats, but I have a lead on a 28ft cabin cruiser from the 70's with no motor,  I could get you some oars, the nice thing about a boat that size is that it can carry your whole team so that you can practice together. As far as internet goes there is not alot of serves up there, we do have satellite tv in the cabin, so I could just leave the blinds open and turn it up really loud, so you guys can watch it, but you will have to watch what my father in-law is watching and he is french. One good thing there is alot of places to get alcohol but if you want really good whiskey, I could ask Dejon where he got his when he was on the Airflo team a couple a years ago. This comes to a grand total of $1100 per person, if you want it to be $1000 I suggest cutting some luxuries like the bucket for the bath room.

J,  we'll take it if Aaron doesn't want it. And we'll pay you 1200 pesos to boot!  And I'll just be generous and throw in a whole case lower shelf rye whiskey... cause that's the kind of guy I am.

Dejon that sounds like a good deal, at current exchange rate 1200 pesos is like $14,433 USD, but the up-standing guy I am, Aaron has first dibs.

Jeremiah:

Do you have any fishing reports on those lakes at the Kenauk area :)?

You mentioned that you will fish there until ice up, so I am just wondering how the fishing is over there (water temperatures, hatches, hot flies, etc.) right now. I saw last week the area got some cooler weather, but it is 19 Degree-Celsius right now :).

There fishing well right now, but some of the guys from other teams are saying that its harder to get the bigger boys since they stocked, so alot stockies at the moment. Ivo and I are fishing there Saturday and the whole team the following weekend for three days. I'll be able to give you a first hand account. Boobies, leechs all the stander stuff works up here, not much for hatches some chironomids. Can't really tell hot fly's because that is what where trying to figure out for next year, but I'll tell you this, that there are no scuds in these lakes but alot of minnows. At this time of year the surface temp runs around 46-60 we are having a very warm fall so the season is running late. These lakes have bows, some small browns and brookies. The color of the water mostly a light amber.  If you guys are trying to price a trip here, look for flights in to Montreal or Ottawa its right in the middle of these two cities. For rooms you could stay at Kenauk but its pricey for a Cottage, unless we get a deal for the nationals, there are alot of B&Bs, near or in Montebello, or look in to renting a cottage here for the two weeks, there are alot for rent and at good prices.  No fly shops in Montebello But there is Anglers Roast on the west Island of montreal on you way out to montebello, there fully stocked.

Thanks Jeremiah, I really appreciate your info. Ok we do not talk about hot flies then :); however do you know where can I get depth contour maps of those lakes?

For sure we will not able to fly out this fall, it is just too pricey, we will be happy if we could make it to the event next year :).

Do you know when the ice is off on those lakes in the spring? Is spring fishing similar to fall fishing? I assume that July and August are dead months for fishing over there. I would take out the whole family over there in the summer time, but I do not think that would help us with the preparation if the fishing is not that good. Yes, they would be able to practice to speak French I assume that :).

The venues will be:

Lac Otter (Lac de la Loutre)
Lac Mills
Lac Taunton
Lac Sugarbush
Lac Green (Lac Vert)

All are rainbow trout lakes, although the occasional brown trout shows
up in these lakes. Eligible species will be rainbow trout, brown trout
and brook trout.  All sessions will be by drifting boat.  Rule mods will
be posted in the spring, but nothing unusual is expected.  The 60 day
rule will apply (until official practice, when venue boats will be
allocated to teams and the venues can be fished during competition
hours).

The fishing is often spectacular this time of year, but the mornings can
be a bit chilly the days are short.  With this mind, we hope to run the
comp sessions 10am-1pm and 3pm-6pm, but if we can shorten the mid-day
break between sessions and start the afternoon sessions at 2:45 or even
2:30, we will.  Sunset is shortly after 6pm.

The Preliminary Basic Schedule (subject to refinement as we move
forward) is as follows -

Monday, Oct 17th, am - arrivals, registration
Monday, Oct 17th, pm - afternoon practice
Tuesday, Oct 18th - all day practice
Wednesday, Oct 19th am - practice until noon
Wednesday, Oct 19th pm - Conversation Symposium; captain's meeting; meet
& greet welcome gathering; a 'no fishing' break
Thursday, Oct 20th - competition sessions 1 & 2
Friday, Oct 21st - competition sessions 3 & 4
Saturday, Oct 22nd am - final competition session
Saturday Oct 22nd pm - closing banquet and related festivities

Volunteers will be based in Papineau cabin, a beautiful (and gigantic!)
lodge-type cabin within the Kenauk reserve.  The captain's meeting,
conservation symposium will be held there and it will serve as the
social centre for all.  Scores will be posted there in the evenings.

Another 12 cabins within the Kenauk reserve have been set aside for
competitors - ie. one for each team. There term 'cabin' is a bit
misleading - while they run on propane and solar, they are really (and I
mean REALLY) nice and comfortable, and most come with their own private
lake.  Each cabin has at least five beds.  They do, however, come in
different sizes - smaller, one bedroom types (Taunton, Mills, Commandant
and Hatchery); mid-sized, two bedroom types (Rough, Pumpkinseed, Hidden
and Muskrat), large, three bedroom types (Sugarbush, Cedar and Green)
and absolutely huge (Pine).

FFC has worked out discounted team rates for the week of the competition
(6 nights - in on Monday; out on Sunday).

*       $1,800 (or $60/day, or $360/wk, per person) for the smaller
cabins;
*       $2, 100 ($70/day, or $420/wk per person) for mid-sized;
*       $2,400 ($80/day, or $480/wk, per person) for large; and
*       $3,000 ($100/day, or $600/wk per person) for Pine.

Additional accommodations are available in the village of Montebello,
but none will match the beauty and experience of staying at Kenauk. It
truly is a special place.

Reservations for Kenauk cabins can be made at any time after 9am on
November 1st, 2010 by calling the Kenauk office - (819) 423-5832.
