August 20 - Trojan Pond Fund-raising Fly Fishing Tournament
« on: August 22, 2011, 11:18:53 AM »
I competed at the Trojan Pond Fund Raising Fly Fishing Tournament this past weekend (same venue as the B.C. Loch-Style competition). It was a great competition and a fantastic fund raiser. The weather was stellar (fished in shorts, sandals and t-shirts) with a fair number of teams showing up for this year's competition (32 two-man teams).

My team struggled during the morning session with mediocre results (middle of the pack and a long-shot at a top 10 finish), but we fought back with a strong performance during the afternoon session (17 trout) to take 2nd place overall. For me, this was another valuable lesson in perseverence and never giving up hope on yourself our your team...

Well done, Todd! It was tough for many of us in both sessions. Good on you for getting on top of the fish and zeroing in on the depth and retrieve in the afternoon session.

Two of our competitive Team Mustang members, Randy Paskall and Randy Patton, managed to come third overall on the basis of a strong first session, so congrats to them as well--although I'm going to get sick of having to listen to the two of them rub it in every time we get together. ::)

My team, Norm Godding and myself, had a tough go as well but were fortunate enough to finish tenth overall. For us the second session should have brought us up in the standings, but too many lost fish just killed us--definitely room for improvement there.

A great tournament with funds going to a worth cause. I'm already looking forward to next year's.

Nothing more rewarding than taking something you are passionate about and applying it for the greater good.  Great job.

Great event for sure.  Had an excellent first session, but a weak last session.

Had a good time doing the event with my dad - but I brought him into it not for competing (despite it being a competition :)), just for getting out and fishing at a fun event for a great cause.  For a 69-year old guy that only fishes once every five years maximum, I think it was a tad overwhelming for him.  Not in a negative way, as to disliking it - matter of fact, I think he found why I like it so much (which is what I wanted to show him).  But his casting is like my golf swing... And I don't ever golf.  Enough said.  :)  He's more used to kicking around in a float tube and making 40-foot casts.  Lol.

Next year he may not return simply because he wants me to go more hard core, and not worry so much about HIS fishing (Cripe - you should have seen some of the 30-year leaders he was pulling out of his fishing vest, wanting to use... "No way in hell are you using that Dad... give me that Rod.  And here, use these flies - forget those 30-year old flies I tied when I was 10!"  I can't help but laugh at it all now!).  But we'll see.  Competing at the high level is important, but is always superceded by family!

Todd,

How do the points work?  Is it just total CM?

Yes, the score is based solely on the cumulative total of the length of the fish in centimeters...

Wow that makes the average fish for the winning team about 41 CM.  That is one impressive fishery.

Yes, it is Mark. There are some very healthy, hard-fighting rainbow trout in residing in this venue - in fact - the "Biggest Fish" award went to a competitor who managed to land a 61 centimeter rainbow trout (the same size as last year's biggest fish)! The savage takes and quality of the fight that is experienced when targeting these trout makes this a most enjoyable fishery.

During the afternoon sessions I caught an extremely powerful trout that snapped my 7-weight Z-AXIS in half (8 pound-test leader is the minimum strength allowed for this competition). Luckily I managed to retrieve the upper half of my fly rod by retrieving the fly line by hand, so I was able to finish playing the trout and brought it into my net.

FYI... This is also the official venue for the B.C. Loch-Style Fly Fishing Championships...

I broke one fish off on 8.5 # that hit like I'd snagged a fence post... but it wasn't as fence post!  They are solid fish there.

What is kind of neat and different about it is that you and a team mate fish out of the same boat, then your fish are added together for points.  So an individual's score has little meaning, and it is all about the team score.  Add that to the fact that your 2-man team fishes together in the same boat, suggesting you can talk and strategize all you want all day, and it really make for a true TEAM event.

That's exactly why John and I enjoy fishing together in this competition, as it allows us the unique opportunity to study and learn from each other, while observing how the other approaches the same scenarios under a competition setting...

Our numbers are nothing to go by, but depending on location: Boobies, Crunchers, Daiwl Bachs, and small nymphs. Big numbers were taken by other anglers using chironomids in the morning session.
