10ft 3wt TFO BVK!
« on: May 13, 2011, 03:07:01 PM »
Guys these should be available very, very soon.  It converts the 8' 3wt into a 10' 3wt... I will have on my door asap today and give you guys my opinion.  I have see one and it is a machine!  All of the BVK series rods have been fantastic imo! Another company joins the badwagon and offers us some great gear!  For anyone that has or is looking at a cheap 10' 5wt, I have the TFO Pro and it is a machine as well... Great for czeching, float tube fishing, and wet flies.

It would be really sweet if they would make a conversion kit for the 9' 5 wt...

I have the 6 and 7-weight BVK rods, they are fantastic rods, light and they cast great. I am waiting for the 3-weight one with that extension.

Ben, please let me know what you think about your 3-weight.

TFO just came out with a light reel to match their BVK rods, I ordered one a couple of days ago, I cannot wait to get it.

That's great news. I've been looking at the BVK for a 5 wt. all purpose rod and now a 4 wt. 10 foot for nymphing. Can't wait to see it Ben.

I do not think TFO will have the extension for the 4-weight this year which is unfortunate, that is the weight I am looking for. Maybe next year.

Hey Ben, I might be making it up to Cherokee after all. I'd like to see that rod if you have it. I'll see you up there and have fun.

Review:    This is an extremely light 10ft rod coming in right at 2.7 ounces.  It is a 5piece which I like.  The conversion kit fits the 8ft 3wt bvk model and takes the orginal 4pc rod to a 5pc 10ft rod via a two piece conversion kit.  The new butt section has a small fighting butt, that I distasted at first but once placed a reel and strung up some line, it was very well balanced and I actually liked it.  This thing is buttery smooth, yet has a nice stiff butt for fighting and playing fish.  The rod tracks easily, doesnt wear out your arm highsticking all day, and is very sensitive in the tip.  It casts a long leader setup superbly! I have to highly recommend this rod as it is a class act!

Got to get a look at this rod.  It has a very different feel than any of the other long nymphing rods on the market.  It is a nice looking stick that is for sure.  I would have to actually fish it before I can make any real review but I think it might have some potential.  I like having 2 rods in one that can be great in certain situations.

Any updates this side? Almost set to pull the trigger on one of these (Rod and 10' kit) but can't find too much info on the standard 8'r or it as a 10 footer.

Mike: Take a look at George Anderson's shootout, where he rates a 9ft 5wt BVK.  I suspect the 8ft 3wt is similar.  The 10ft kit slows the rod down, but I haven't seen one first hand.

From here:
http://www.yellowstoneangler.com/FlyRodReview.Best5weightflyrod.HardyZenith.SageZ-axis.WinstonB3x.WinstonBIIIx.LoomisNRX.SageVXP.StCroixLegendEliteTempleforkBVK.asp

"For one of the least expensive rods in our shootout, this rod is impressive. It is one of the very lightest rods we tested, bested by only the Orvis rods. The swing weight is quite light also, giving it a nice light and lively feel. But for a light rod it had a huge amount of power –we feel a little too much. The stiffness level is at the top end for 5-weights, especially for fishing at short to medium distances. Good casters will like this rod, especially at longer ranges with a #5 line, but beginners will be a lot better off shifting up to a #6 line, especially at 25-50 feet. I was impressed that a rod that costs so little had this kind of guts and performance. The color is a pleasing dark olive green with wraps to match and a neat looking olive graphite spacer in the uplocking reel seat.

Craftsmanship is just average though. The cork they used for the handle is not great, and the coating on the wraps was inconsistent and even a little sloppy in spots. Another thing that drives me nuts is that this is the only company that does not give you a hard case with the rod. So if you want one, then plan to spend another twenty bucks.  Good for dealers I suppose, but a downside for the consumer. Maybe this is one way they can afford their cheaper warranty policy... "

Thanks Alain. I've cast the 5wt a few times (And read that article - it is what has made me test the BVK so often), and have always felt that it doesn't load nicely until I have about 20m of line out. Was wondering if the 3wt is similar..

In terms of overlining, how would a DT compare to a WF? I could always go for a 3.5wt WF line, but considering I want this setup to be for super delicate presentations, it might be better to go for a 3 or 4wt DT? Any suggestions or recommendations?

A 4wt line really compliments the rod well and a 3.5 would be great as well.  Its a powerful little rod but not as much as the 5wt. I have several of these.  The 10ft version is a LOT slower than the 8' version.  Pat Brechbill from Team Dead Drift has some great insight on this rod as well and would respond i think to your questions.

I've been using this rod pretty much exclusively for the last 2 weeks. I get on the water at least 5 times a week if not 6. I've probably got 30 hours of fishing time with it. This is my opinion of the rod. It has an excellent tip with great sensitivity. I feel really connected to my flies with this rod. The tip is super sensitive and I've felt fish that I didn't feel with either the Greys or Echo. It is extremely light and easy to work on the water. I've got a Large Arbor reel to balance it and the balance point is right at the spot where the cork and blank meet. This allows me to put my index finger on top of the blank for extra feel. You also can really do a strong j-hookset with out worrying about breaking tippet. This method has put more flies in the roof of the mouth of the trout than I was experiencing before. The one negative I would give it is it's not as stout in the backbone as the Echo is. A large fish will need some finessing to get in where I think you can muscle the fish easier with the Echo. It also throws a dry/dropper combo well. I liked this rod so much that I ordered it. I will say that I will get an Echo somewhere down the line to fish streams/rivers where bigger fish are the norm.
