10ft 4wt BVK??
« on: September 09, 2011, 09:45:04 AM »
I just saw on TFO's website that they have are now making the BVK in a 10ft 4wt.  Has anyone tried one out?  I have a Pro 10ft 5wt but I think it is heavy and to me feels a little mushy.  I have also seriously considered an Echo Shadow PE 10ft 3wt.  I am in WNC and I fish the Davidson the most.  I know plenty of you know that river and others around the area if that helps to demonstrate what I will be fishing it on.  I did get to try out the Echo for a few minutes a month or two ago and I liked it.

Ive heard in general they are a pretty fast rod...that may or may not mean stiff and I dont think you want stiff for European nymphing or wet fly fishing....but given the configuration it may be a little different.  It would be a steal if it is not a broomstick.

Chris, the Shadow certainly isn't for everyone but is hands down my number #1 river stick. The rod just constantly instills confidence every time I pick it up with a soft tip to help me land head shakers and protect 7x while still having enough guts to cut through driving wind and land a 6lb steelhead.

What I've found over the last 2 years is if you're not a fan of this rod then you will gravitate toward a fast sage or slow greys (or equivalent).

I currently use the 10' 3 wt BVK and I love this rod. I wouldn't recommend it for trophy fish and the 4 wt may be better suited for this. I hear they are coming out with a 5 wt 10 footer as well. Excellent sensitivity in these rods in my opinion. I've fished the echo and greys and I would give this a nudge over the greys in tip sensitivity. It also works really well with my 40' mono leader setup. Can toss nymph rigs and dry droppers the entire leader length.

1st off , dejon how many times to you find yourself nymphing with 7x ? I am just curious , i never tried it i must say. Pat a 40' leader = wow now thats a leader or a spin fish rig ....lol with the new nymph fly lines a long leader is def. out for me at this point . They are light enough to create no belly in the tippet as far as i am concerned. I guess what intrigues me most is the different ways people fish with most coming away with almost the same results. very very interesting

Chris
I like the Echo, as you know.  I would say try out a couple different rods, if you can, to see which one you like the best. Don't rule out looking at the Cabela's CZN rod either.  I know a lot of guys like and it has a great price. Rods are really a personal preference try as many as you can.

As for the 7x tippet.  I think it makes a big difference. Once you get comfortable with it you will use it more and more.  I use 7x  most of the time. Now if I'm fishing trophy water I will fish an a bigger tippet.

I agree with Pat leader is personal choice like rods.  I use to fish 40'+ leaders and they work good for me. Now I have moved to a shorter leader around 20'. I have found that my current leader setup is more of an all around leader nymph, dry, dry dropper ect.  I think leaders are something that anglers are always tweeking.

Love my BVK!  Only wish I had waited longer.  I didn't know they were coming out with a 10ft 4wt!!!!  I'm currently running the 9ft 5wt and it is a great all around rod, from big trout to smallmouth bass I use it a lot.  Now I just have to figure out how to find the money for the 10ft 4wt.

By the way, I see on Lance Egan's blog that a 10ft 3wt 5pc TFO BVK is coming out.

That rod has been out for a few months and it's my primary nymph rod. Excellent rod with a great tip. Have to do a firm hookset but you won't break any tippet with it. Backbone is suspect for trophy fish. Biggest fish for me on the rod is an 18" bow and a 16" brown. Could not muscle those fish in. Just picked up a 10' 5 wt Cabelas CZN for the big boys and my lake rod.

Back to nymphing rods, has anybody seen where St Croix had a nymph rod out this year designed by Kelly Gallup. Has anybody tried it yet? Really like the St Croix rods. Looks like the impact of comp fishing in the US is starting to reflect with the major players.

Thanks Jim. Not really in the market for another 10' stick yet, but I really like St Croix rods. Haven't tried one yet I didn't like. Maybe I'll PM him just to see if he's tried one yet.

Just adding my 2 cents... Got a chance to wiggle the 10' 4wt bvk today. Definitely a much faster rod than the 10' 3wt bvk. Surprisingly faster.... Comparing the flex to the 10' 5wt professional, the 4wt is still faster. I was really surprised at how fast the 4wt is. It is very light, but I would be suspect of its ability to protect lighter tippets. I can make a hard hook set with my 5wt professional and it still not break 6x. In my honest opinion it would probably make a good lake rod, but as far as an "awesome" czech rod, I'm not so sure. I've been on the fence as to which bvk to try first, but now I'm pretty sure it'll be the 3wt.
