3wt Intermediate Lines
« on: January 11, 2012, 04:41:44 AM »
Hey guys

I'm on the hunt for my 3wt rig, after using it for a weekend, I'm keeping my 5wt for other species.

I was hoping to get the Barrio GT90 intermediate, but that only comes as light as 4wt. Next in line was the Wulf TT Monoclear, but again, no 3wt. Also the Rio Hover, but no 3wt.

So I'm now left with the Wulf Intermediate, which comes in blue-green. How important is the colour of an intermediate? I seem to think that it'd be quite an issue. Rio also has the aqualux and camolux. Anyone have experience with these?

I've been told Cortland make some good intermediates, but I've not had good experiences with them..

Am I silly to want an intermediate on a 3wt?

Fishing a BVK. I had tried the 5wt many, many times, but it never felt good to me. And after seeing all the ravings on here, I decided to give the 3wt a bash. What a rod!! Can lift a lot of line considering its an 8', and doesn't struggle throwing 20m+ for me. Best rig I have used so far!
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Dropped Mr Barrio an e-mail. He might produce one sometime this year. I really hope he does, as I can't find any other intermediate I'd prefer. Not sure if its worth going for a clear line.

What's your target application for a 3wt slow sinker on an 8footer?

I expect I can use it in many situations this side. Particularly when wind picks up around our still waters. I understand denser lines will deal with the wind a little better and not suffer from wind drag on the surface of the water.

I will be buying the 10ft Bvk kit, so will have the option of that as well, but at the moment I am trying to cover a bit more ground. Also I expect an intermediate will be handy to use in situations where I usually used split shot (to get blood worms, buggers or nymphs a deeper).

I don't think it would be beneficial for use in flowing water, but I rarely get the opportunity to fish streams for trout.

I've not ever fished intermediate, so I am open to suggestions or criticism ;)

I went to Sterkfontein, one of the nicest stillwaters in the country and7km x 12km I believe,  on Monday. Landed 7 yellowfish in the region of 2kg each. What a blast, water was crystal clear, casting black beetles over their runs. They take so much more aggressively than trout, was really great.

I am heading back that way in the morning :D
