Airflo Forty Plus Extreme or Expert
« on: February 25, 2011, 05:16:22 PM »
The Airflo SS lines I've used mostly have been the longer progressive taper Delta series, but I'd like to hear if anyone has any feedback on the Forty Plus Expert or Extreme.  In general, I do like Airflo and the Power Core low-stretch line and have about 6 or 7 tight now.

I see they improved the Expert and Extreme a little this year in the transition area.  And they made the Expert slightly more heavy headed, with the Extreme even moreso.

I've been tempted to pick up a couple of the Extreme tapers.  Anyone have anything good or bad to say?  Extreme vs Expert?

I have a few of both, but was told that the Expert performed much better than the Extreme (for loch-style fishing anyways).

The slightly longer head working in our favour when casting from a seated position perhaps, as it allows us one extra false cast?  The shorter Extreme head better when standing, so you have a little more height to shoot the line?  That would be my line of reasoning I suppose... but not sure.

Chris,

These lines go in and out of fashion, I am not convinced they give you a great edge from the boat other than the fast sinkers as the longer you cast the deeper the line will go.  However as you are able to fish with weighted flies then their goes that advantage!! We all fish with Airflo lines i would suggest that you get the non stretch lines the difference in hook up and feel is amazing. I would then invest on the sweep lines these fish in a lovely arc perfect for fishing the hang

Ronnie,

Why do you say that the SS Sweeps are perfect for fishing the hang?  After all..what goes down comes up right?

Ronnie, I agree with your take on the low-stretch lines.  After using my first one I really liked the feel.  I have about half a dozen currently, and slowly replacing some of my other lines.

Loren,

The Sweep comes round in an arc like the old HiD line used to ie the belly sinks quicker than the tip.  That means when you fish it with a bobbie on the point the fish follow in down  and round and normally take it hung as the curve straightens out.  This works with all the lines unlike the traditional sinkers that actually come straight back at you so only the really fast lines get down deep enough to hang properly.  Unless of course you are not drifting then you can let it sink as long as you want.

Seems like John Horsey thinks the Expert lines are optimal and the Extremes too short of a head for casting from a boat.

That's good enough for rme.
