Amadou patch
« on: December 07, 2011, 10:22:14 PM »
In my quest to keep my CDC flies dry, I am thinking of ordering a Amadou Patch.  I have heard that they work great. Anyone have any experience with them? Where to purchase?

i have used everything from the cheap ones to the expensive ones. and while they
do work. once they get wet they take forever to dry. feathercraft has them.

Ive had decent luck with them, but as David said they will take a while to dry.  Its no big deal if you remember to put it by the heater in the car, or by a fan.

I'm sure you've tried the powder right Sean?  I think I remember seeing bulk alternatives on ebay, so you can rip through it.  I might have to get some come spring - my last brand new bottle opened up in a jacket pocket. Man, that pocket is super dry now though.

The amadou patch that I use works well, however it does need to be dried out.  For an average day of fishing dries it holds up well and does a nice job.  A little powder and I am ready to go.

Thanks guys. I have been using frogs fanny and love it but what I have been looking is something to help get the majority of water out of the fly so my frogs fanny / dry shake will work better. I hate blowing, squeezing and false casting to dry my flies. I'm gonna give the Amadou patch a try. The issues with it taking a long time to dry worries me a little. I tend to wade very aggressively and have been known to take a dip every now and then. LOL

A technique I learned over the summer was apply Tiemco Dry Magic and then coat with Frog's Butt.  Works very well for a long time.  I also bought the Frog Butt knock off on ebay.  Works great can't tell the difference from the real stuff.  I bought a quart size container and it will last years.

I have had a Petitjean Amadou patch on my pack for a long time and it works great.  When it is damp, I just put it on the floor in front of our dehumidifier overnight and it gets bone dry.  I also use paper towel all the time and it works equally well.

A note about floatant: the powders are excellent, but in my opinion belong only on the hackle.  For the flies above (my fast water dry-dropper sighters), I have the best success treating the polywing (Tiemco Aero Wing) with paste floatant (Mucilin or Dilly Wax), brushing it out and letting it dry.  On stream, I mainly dry the hackle and treat that with powder as needed.  I have not tried some of the other products like Loon Hydrostop or Rain-X.

To brush out the flies, I use this:

I use loon Top ride powder for most of my dry fly fishing. I do use the amadou patch but more for CDC flies

Alain,

What hook are you using for those parachute flies ?

(My replies pertain more to fly construction, not drying, so I started a new thread.)
