Best Sighter for Fall / Winter Fishing?
« on: August 23, 2011, 11:40:59 PM »
I've read that seeing your sighter in the light conditions that prevail in fail and winter can be difficult so I'm wondering what people are using at these times.

Would Rio's Kahuna indicator material work?  As I understand it, it's a piece of fly line that's had core removed.  It comes in a single piece which the angler then cuts to the desired length.  Not having seen it myself, I'm not sure if it is threaded onto the leader or if it is slit lengthwise.  When I first read about it, I thought it might be a good replacement for the usual two pieces of colored mono.  Now I'm thinking that the weight might interfere with casting or create a bend that would make strike detection more difficult.

To my knowledge, Rio's Kahuna Indicator is a floating foam / fishpimp style indicator.  I can, and do, still use euro nymphing principles with this style of indicator on occasion, but it seems that you are referring to a different style of indicator similar to the fly line sleeves that are available.

I'm a straight sighter guy and my favorite has small pieces of orange fly line with the core removed slipped over two knots in the sighter.  It only takes a very small piece of sleeve to show up under most any daylight conditions, maybe a 1/4" or 1/2" at the most.  It weighs next to nothing and doesn't effect the drift in the slightest.

If you want to be comp legal, your options are restricted to monofilament.  I use high vis yellow and red all year round and have little to no trouble.

Otherwise, I love orange backing material with intermittent black stripes.  Just wind the material around a dowel or pencil and run a sharpy down one side.  It's obnoxiously visible.

On a recent trip a fisherman told me about an indicator product coming from Cortland. Apparently it's similar to the Jan Siman bi-color indicator mono. Anyone know of this?

Dave,
Torrey told me about the Cortland stuff some time ago.  He didn't think it was as bright as the Jan Siman bicolor.  There is also a YouTube video from Cortland below.

i have used  the cortland indicator material it is nice , comes in three different sizes. I think you guys will really like the new nymph line as well , It is light enough (140 grains ) that  those of you using really long leaders can chop them off quite a bit  ! ;)

Much cheaper than foreign bi-color line is sunset amnesia crappie line in 10 lb test it changes color every 5 ft from red to chart. I use the section of line where the two tone transition is. A 100 meter spool on their ebay store was a whopping $4 plus s& h. Enough sighter material for a lifetime.

Siman bi-color is the best. I blood knot pink mono to that. Tried other mono but it's translucent, the siman stuff is not. I can see that up to dark.

Jim, I'd like to try out the Cortland material but I've never seen it in a store.
