I am not a competitive fisherman but I am addicted to this rod.  I have the 10' 6" 3 wt and it performs so well, fast yet floppy.  I have heard it described as a one trick pony but I disagree.  I usually won't leave the stream to get another niche rod and have a hard time carrying two, so I end up using this for all applications.  Other than real heavy streamers it does it all.  I also am more confused than ever with the way these rods are weighted.  3,4,5 wts tough telling the difference.  The echo feels a whole lot different than my 3wt TXL :D

Can anyone recommend a good retailer of these rods State side (preferably with relatively low international shipping rates)? I'm coming into a small bit of cash and I'd like to grab a 10'6" 3wt while I've got the scratch in hand.

Thanks,

Aaron

I picked mine up through these guys:
http://www.caddisflyshop.com/
It was free shipping for here in the US.

I have one of those rods as well. Very nice rod but I don't like the snake eyes. I bent the top guide on a rock and I had to bend it back. If only they could make the guides stronger without compromising the action of the rod.

'S'all good.

Just ordered from Caddisflyshop (thanks for the tip Bob). Standard price with free shipping to Canada (surprised the hell out of me).

Looking forward to it.

No problem. It took about a week for me to get. For free shipping, I wouldn't expect a 2 day delivery across country. The only issue (if you can call it an issue) is that I had to call them to track the package at first. After that, I was able to impatiently track it across the US. It wasn't that it took too long, it was just that I couldn't wait to get it. I felt bad for not getting it locally (which I do most of my rods), but I saved on taxes and the shipping was free. Plus, it helped that local shop I bought it from.

I know what you mean about the guilt associated with not buying locally, but the 10'6" is not stocked regularly at the local shops and the asking price is about 20% higher than the Echo MSRP (plus 12% tax). Nobody can fault someone for covering overhead and maybe helping offset some losses (I don't generally mind a bit of a premium for good service), but that kind of difference rankles a little.

I have the 10 1/2' 3wt & 11 4wt Echos (I think both are terrific).  I also have the Grey's Streamflex 10' 3 & 4wts, my ex-wife doesn't care how I spend my money. I really like the feel, sensitivity, and quick recovery of the Echos and I'm thinking about getting the 10' 3wt. Can anyone comment on this rod.

Hi Dave,

the 10ft 3wt  (3100) has a little bit different rod action than the other two...all three rods were designed to be fast action through 3/4 of the rod with a slow to medium action tip, but the 3100 just happened to be a bit faster than the other two rods in the series...it ended up that way because of the shorter length.  Some anglers love the faster action of the 3100 and others do not...

cheers
Pete

Pete,
Thanks for the info on the 10' 3wt. For my casting/fishing style the Grey's is too soft, I will be getting the Echo.

Whoo Hoo! My brand new Shadow PE 10'6" 3wt arrived today in the mail. Can't wait to give it a spin--probably tomorrow if the stars align.

I think I'll put together a brand new leader system and sighter to celebrate LOL!

I've been testing that rod for the last 2 weeks and I love it. Great tip feel with a pretty strong butt section.

Damn clients are interfering in my testing process. Made it out for a half an hour before dark yesterday, but the water was like chocolate milk and the fish were only picking dries off the surface. It roll casts beautifully, but I need better fishing conditions to test it properly.

Hi mates!!
Only one question:
Which rod is more sensitive: echo 10" #3, echo10,6" #3, Greys 10" #2, Greys 10" #3, Greys 11" #3, Z-axis 10" #3?
Only one is more sensitive, which could be?
Thanks and sorry for my english.

Follow-up to my post on 5/8; I got the 10' 3wt. It's really a sweet rod, smooth, sensitive, quite different than my 10 1/2' 3wt, perfect for the smaller water I fish a lot. My Greys has become my back up.

After reading this review I'm even more excited about the rod. I ordered a 10 1/2' 3wt and I'm anxiously waiting for the brown truck to show up. I'll be putting a Nautilus FW 7 on mine.
i love that reel..do you?

Jose, I think you need to throw the new 10' BVK in there as well. I've been fishing that rod for a month now and love it. I fished the Echo 10.6' 3 wt and the greys 10' 4 wt and the BVK is more sensitive in my opinion. I will state that the Echo is a close second. The only disclaimer I would use for choosing between the two is on how big the fish will be. The Echo has a stouter butt section and I believe handles fish over 20"s better.

Jose, If it's purely "sensitivity" then I'd wager the A-Axis.  The other rods listed have softer tips.

So how does the 8' 3wt fish?  I am hoping I can get the 3wt and fill two gaps in my quiver.

I've been using the Echo 10' 6" 3wt, for just over a month now--Czech, Polish, French, Spanish, hopper-dropper, dry, wet, streamers, et al. It's still early days to form a solid opinion, but at this point I would say that this isn't a rod made for "feel". A small fish has to slam the fly pretty solidly to get that strike detection in the hand if the rod is angled in any way away from the retrieve. That said, it excels as a casting and presentation tool--great control, a very soft tip, strong butt section, made for roll casting and flipping long leaders.

Comparisons to the Grey's aren't necessarily valid imho. It's not really comparing apples to apples. These are very different rods, made for very different fishing styles. The jury is still out on which suits me better (I have the 10' 3wt Greys), but I'll have a better idea by summer's end.

I have the Echo Shadow 10'6" 3 weight and the 11' 4 weight. I love both rods and have really grown accustomed to their actions and feel. I recently had a mishap on the Ausable River and busted the tip off of my 3 weight. I sent the rod in to have it repaired/ serviced and fed my wife a sob story about needing a replacement rod to fill the void while the Echo was being repaired. She begrudgingly agreed and I rushed out to a local fly shop and purchased a Greys streamflex 10' 3 weight before she changed her mind. To my surprise, the Echo was delivered yesterday by the postman. I had just mailed it to Rajeff Sports on the 23rd of June(two weeks from PA to WA and back again). I fully expected the turnover for the rod to be over two months. Obviously, its important to get a rod that fits your own personal liking and style. But quality service certainly goes a long way and is not always easy to find this day and age.
