lake boxes?
« on: August 22, 2011, 08:41:11 PM »
at several comps I've seen some sweet boxes being used at lake venues. they're rectangular approx 14in X 10in and have a dense slitted foam on the inside not unlike the blue kind used in the cliff boxes. I was wondering if anyone has ever used these boxes and knows where to get them or has some better alternatives?

Surprisingly hard to find what I like are "scrap book organizers". Learned this one from the brits. They are about an inch thick by paper size and take thin foam. Easy to stack and access.

The VUEfinder Competition box is capable of storing up to 1,000 flies with a unique locking clip design which allows competition fly anglers to measure selected flies to ensure they meet the International competition fishing regulations and standards. What I like is you can see your flies at a glance and it holds a Sh!t load of flies, they stack well and water prof. If your just starting to build your lake collection then buy two and that will last you for some time, unless your fly slut like Arron then it will last you a month.

Second that Miah... It is double sided and I prefer the ripple foamnot the slits. That allows you to space how ever you want.

I looked for what D had but had no luck, ordered this... have 1 for lakes and 1 for overflow of my pallet and river boxes!

The only issue I would have with the Vuefinder boxes (at least the ones I've seen) is the lack of clearance for the larger hackled patterns. I have a knock-off that squishes big travelling sedges and other flies flat. I picked up a cheap no slit version that is better, but it still plays havoc with larger hoppers and the like.

I will say that the clear sided boxes are the way to go. I might make a few of the Brits' versions described above, but the only thing putting me off is the size. I can't afford to travel with the big lake boxes that they do and an 14x8.5" or 11x8.5" flybox wouldn't fit too well in my bag.

Just because I have 6 of these boxes for just my lake flies that does not make a me a fly slut.  I like to tie flies.

Great boxes...sturdy...and agree with Kalvin get the ripple foam instead of the slitted foam as it makes it easier to organize and space your flies.

I have no problem with my hackled flies in these boxes but I dont use large hackled dries on lakes.
