Bracing for the storm.
« on: December 18, 2009, 11:05:54 PM »
Winter storm is supposed to drop some major snow in the area tommorrow and Sunday.  I was curious, has anyone here ever skied to access some out of the way trout water?

No but fishing during the snow is one of my favorite things. Hardly any people, everything looks very pretty and its always really quiet when it snows.

Nice!   I can say one thing, since I got a pair of those vibram soled boots, I no longer roast my ankles walking in the snow as I did with felt.  My Hardy is rigged in mantown with copious amounts of ice off paste, the flies are tied, the waders and boots are hanging too.  That case of handwarmers I purchased on Amazon has got a good dent in it already.......

Back home after a nice day of fishing.  The snow really added to the beauty on the stream.

I don't know how things were where you are, but boy was it cold here yesterday, thermometer never cracked 20 and the wind was a steady 10-20.  Still got a 1/2 dozen on my home waters in 2 hours.  Had the river to myself too, nobody on the water at all.  Different flies this week, caddis larva and micro cased caddis were the winners.  No fish pics, my biggest was 18, the rest were in the 13-14 inch range, but because of the cold air, I decided to get em back in quickly.  I was wiped out after that, cleaning up the snow first thing in the morning, fished for a few hours with a good hike into the place I fished, came home, hung out with some coffee, dinner then bam out by 7:30 on the couch.

We got pics!  I just have to sift through them today.

Good practice yesterday.  Kinda hard too really practice very many techniques when ALL the fish in the stream are held up in the deepest pools, but it did highlight the need to carry at least a small selection of real "bombs."  I threw on my "Cased Caddis Bomb" for a bit, but 3 7/0 split are just TOO much :)  I actually renamed it the "USS Caddis" for the huge sound it makes when it hits the water.  Will be fiddling around with that this week.  2 7/0s is probably the trick.

Rubber leg stone, VladiWorm, and a smattering of Caddis and Egg patterns did most of the damage yesterday.  Using a double anchor system was key at many points.  Weather wasn't too bad and we even saw a little sun near mid day.  All though the sun actually broke apart some of the shelf ice actually shutting us down for 1 or 2 hours, so we made a flip to another stream in the "valley" and found open water.  Almost all gorgeous winter color rainbows ranging from 10 to 18 inches.

yeah we got pics alright!  I think I spent too much time taking pics and not enough time fishing.  But is was a nice day to be out even if the high was only 30 degrees.
