Fall Loch fly fishing
« on: October 14, 2010, 11:04:19 AM »
I am planning to fish this saturday and one of the lakes in the area on Saturday.  The Lake was recently stocked with rainbows and I know has some holdovers that made it through the summer.  Hopefully I will be able to find some surface activity and catch a few trout.  Any tips on how trout act in the fall would be great this lake is mostly all rainbows so I am sure they will be feeding.  Who knows maybe I will hit a hatch.

More than likely there won't be a hatch, though you never know.  There are some late midges, and you might get a waterboatmen migration which traditionally happens in the fall.

Being that they're recently stocked fish, they won't be too clued into the local insect life yet, so those guys may not act predictably (they'll be more curious of course though) - but any holdovers may be more aggressively feeding to put on weight.  But as there are minimal hatches (likely none), feeding is going to be of the binge sort and sporadic (on for 10 minutes, off for 50 minutes, more than likely).  Fish will be less concentrated and more spread out (as there are no haatches to keep them focused in specific areas), but will likely be looking for leeches, dragonfly nymphs, and damselfly nymphs - insects that overwinter.  But watch for any waterboatmen...

Starting with leech patterns is always wise.  It's big so the new stockies will spot it and bite it out of curiousity, and any holdovers will hopefully recognize it for what it is.

Fish should be starting to move into the shallows too, depending on water temps.

Good luck on the day.

I've been trying to get out once or twice a week in the boat even if just for a few short hours.  Ironically, I'm passing up the great coho fishing to chase otherwise "smaller" trout, just because I'm having fun with the LS fishing!

Chris, I can't blame you buddy. Fishing for Salmon vs fairly educated Trout is like trying to compare weight lifting and chess :) Curious though, how big do the Coho run there?  Do you guys use pink poly wogs and such? I really miss the Silvers of the Alagnak river in Alaska.  Almost more like thick, well fed, pike than salmon in my book.  Just find them, deliver the right pattern, and they were on it!  Not much like the bastard lake run coho we have in our parts.

Like a lot of areas, the river dictates the size of the fish - so in some rivers, tha average is about 3-6 pounds, with an 10-15 pound fish possible, but quite less likely.

Other systems definitely have a bigger average (closer to 7-10), with more of a shot at a 12-15 pounder.

But that's Vancouver area I am used to.  If you go to the West Coast of Vancouver Island, you can find bigger fish still.  And if you go further north, you'll find the same thing - bigger fish.

The large slow rivers (almost lake-like) or beaches are the funnest to me.  And the sloughs (which we have a lot of) - shalllow waters, and hard running fish.

Pink is still a good colour here.  Greens and blues often work well for very fresh fish, and I find reds work well once they've been in the system awhile.  It has somehting to do with the fact that their sensitivity to different light spectrums changes from when they are in salt water to when they hit the fresh water, moving from greeenish-blue to red sensitive.  I use a combination of two patterns - The Rolled Muddler (which is a streamlined version of the regular muddler) and Popsicle Leech.

I'll second the dragon fly nymph patterns. They have been my number 1 this fall.
