Heavy Lake Flies...
« on: January 18, 2010, 11:56:29 AM »
I was curious if anyone has ever played around with using heavily weighted flies for still water fishing?  Possibly on long mono leaders, but maybe not.  I can't say I know exactly how this would be a benefit exactly over say using a type 8, but you could have pinpoint accuracy on depth.  Flies weighted in the range of 2-5grams.

Achieving much time may be difficult because you'd probably be working constantly just in front if not underneath the boat.

Notion just crossed my mind and thought I'd launch it into (cyper)space.

Interesting idea Are you thinking almost a vertical jigging technique?

Dejon,

I think heavy flies would be useful if you were fishing static over very deep fish.  But flies that are too heavy will fly through the layers. A medium weighted pattern would allow you to fish slowly down and then back through on the way up twice the chance of connecting with the fish.

Ronnie is spot-on with his advice, but with that being said; I have at times used heavily-weighted patterns (even Czech Nymphs that closely resmble scuds) in order to by-pass smaller trout that are working the surface, at times when I am targeting larger fish that I've observed working the bottom.

In fact, one of my favourite (and most productive) stillwater patterns uses a 3/16" brass bead to impart an undulating motion as the fly is stripped and worked through the water (works best when used on an intermediate sinking line). But I much prefer non-weighted patterns when fishing under a competition setting...
