N.A.L.S. stillwater series announcement
« on: February 23, 2010, 02:09:19 PM »
Hello All!
this is still kind of informal and subject to change but,

I've been scheming this "for fun" still water series concept for a couple of years, and all I have to show for it is a few ambiguous word documents and scant file folders.  Thank goodness several others(like Rob Kolanda, Mike Sexton, Bret Bishop, Jim Hickey, Phil Rowley, Normy and others) have gotten involved and are pushing the ball now.

Our overarching idea for this thing tentatively called N.A.L.S. (North American Lake Series) are as follows:

*HAVE FUN!

*Learn more about still water fishing—mostly Loch Style, but perhaps some bank, and anchor fishing as well.

*Keep entry fees under 50 bucks!

* schedule the comps on weekends…

*Adhere to FIPS  Mouche rules.

*Keep a running point total for Awarding a Cup trophy at the end of the series each year.

*knock back a few cold ones!

*HAVE FUN!

cheers

Best Regards

Pete,

I feel pretty confidant that I can speak on behalf of the whole TroutLegend Cooperative when I say you KNOW we're interested! This is really the core of what we've been trying to organize with this endeavor.  Create a network of fips-mouche style competitions to promote competitive fly fishing in North America.

Over the next few months we'll be announcing many competitions that competitors and non-competitors alike can enter.

Having a solid series of pure stillwater competitions every year would be really clutch.  Unfortunately, as many of you know there's just a real shortage of suitable lakes in the East in general.  It's darn near impossible to find one that has all the golden attributes:
1)Strict or Primary Trout Population
2)Correct Size & Depth
3)Public Access
4)Boat/Motor Rentals

I was actually talking to Hamilton about organizing a loch style event up in Quebec because they have "pay-to-play" lakes that would make it easy as pie to hold a comp. like this, but the cost would end up around 2-3bills a person.  Like the one for the 2008 Nationals.  Still, not bad considering you get 2 full days of lake style practice/competition.

Anywaze, we're in!

I'd be very interested in hosting one in our Kamloops region.

Not quite exactly sure what you'd like be to "take off" as I don't wear hosers or ladies stockings of any sort...  ::)

Oh come on now Petey...

Did you honestly think that I didn't know what you were talking about!?!

I mean, you of everyone should know that everyone up here in "The Great White North" knows how Bob and Doug MacKenzie are! Knowing who is our country's current Prime Minister is a totally different matter.

That would sort of be like an American not knowing who "Larry the Cable Guy" is, but knowing who is the Vice President. Eh?

Coo loo coo coo coo, coo loo coo coo coo...  ;D

Would love to have a weekend tournament out of the Durango area.  Two reservoirs that would be challenging: Vallecito and Lemon.  Just need to start working on dates, seems like there's a few things in the works for the fall so I could schedule it during mid summer.

Do you prefer red/white or yellow/orange "bungs"?

Pete,

Just kicking around a few ideas in my head... I was curious how many competitors are you anticpating or considering to set the limit at? The reason why I ask is that the availability of enough boats (of equal calibre)might be a challenge, as well as the costs associated with renting them.

I would suggest that we should perhaps consider booking cabins at quality lakes such as Roche or Tunkwa (near Kamloops, British Columbia) where they have plenty of room (cabins or camping) as well as a fair number of boats for rent. Most cabins can easily accomodate four persons sharing, which makes the costs much more affordable. You would definitely have a better chance of securing the resort's boats if we choose to stay at the resorts...

Here are some links to these two resorts for more information (both where venues for the 1993 WFFC):

This place has a lot of boats it hosted the 2008 Canadian nationals, if we have enough people, we could probable get the price reduced.

fishing per person a day                   $39.00
Boat                                               $22.50
Trolling Motor                                  $24.50
Life jackets                                      $5.50
Campsite                                         $26.50 per site  ($11.75 for extra person)
___________________________________
total                                                 $118 Canadian a day

We could chip in for food, I would drive up the barbecue it can cook 89 hambergers or 150 hotdogs at once. Also, I could try and convince the wife to cook for us (she works as a cook).

Todd,

That is good advice.  I think that these comps will be small to medium sized informal events the first couple of years...If there are more than 20 anglers, I will be surprised.   My vision is for anglers to pretty much pay for their own costs during comps--maybe even bringing their own boats.  If the boats are not always equal in the beginning, the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie should override the inequities.

The motto for this "NALS Cup" comp series should be "It's not about the CUP!"

obviously if a resort offers all the same style boats, that makes things much easier!
