anyone seen this rig before?
« on: August 21, 2009, 10:18:31 AM »
Ok I have a huge case of the Fridays today.  Here is a rig that I have been kicking around.  I am sure over the years someone must have thought of this already but I have never read in anywhere.  I am thinking of a rig that uses 2 loop to loop connections.  Let’s just take a Steelhead set up for an example.  Off the flyline you run a 10 to 12 foot leader tapered to 2x down to a loop.  Do a loop to loop connection to maybe an 18 inch (depending on water depth) piece of 4x and add weight to the end of that.  Enough weight to get it down pretty quickly.  Now the strange part… add another loop to loop connection to the loop at the end of the 2x (leader that goes to flyline) with another piece of 2x of maybe between 12 and 18 inches (the longer you go the more chance of twisting I would imagine).  The fly goes on the end of that…So the set up looks like this:

                          Flyline
              |
                        |
Leader   10 or 12 foot long down to 2x
               |
                              |
         Loop ------ fly
              |
            Weight

So you are asking why…well I am not really sure.  No just kidding.  Here is what I am thinking.  The weight is not on the same section of mono as the fly so to fly acts more natural.  The fly is down low but as long as the fly section is shorter than the weight section there is less of a chance the fly hooks rocks.  If the weight gets stuck and you must break off the only part you should lose is the weight (and maybe that section of mono that the weight is attached to).  In the above example that would be the 4x piece; using a weaker mono for the weight section should ensure that is the piece that breaks keeping the fly safe.  Weight is cheap and easily replaced where as flies can be more expensive and more work to tie.  Ok those are the pluses as I see them.  The only down side I see is that the section of mono that the fly is tied to has the chance of getting twisted up with the leader.  Has anyone ever seen anything like this?  Has anyone ever tried anything like this?

Thelow - keep in mind that I am a novice, but here are my thoughts.
I would think that putting the 2 loops through the 2x would would be somewhat jammed up and make the piece attached to the fly pretty stiff and not give the fly as much natural action as you would hope for.
I would think you might be better served by using something similar to the bounce rig setup as seen in this thread

Hope this helps

yeah I was thinking the loops would give it more action then just tags but I am rethinking it.  Like I said I am sure other people have thought of this before   :)

Nice idea!  I hear alot of anglers utilizing loops even direction at the fly eye to create more life like movement and action.  In theory it sounds a lot like the bounce rig or "90deg rig" but may have it's own inherent value in application.  Looking forward to your stream testing results:)
