Asheville, North Carolina

I've been planning on moving from MA southward for some time now and lately I've gotten it into my head that Asheville, NC would be a solid place to live.  I know we have alot of people on here from NC so i figured i'd get some tips and feedback from you fellas.  I'm interested in Asheville for a few reasons; it seems like a nice medium sized city that is not dead, it seems to have an strong/emerging art scene, i know the Davidson River is within 40 minutes of there.  I was curious if any of you southerners could give me more insight into the lay of the land, whether it be about the city or about the fishing.  I'm interested in both.  Im assuming there are other good fishing opportunities in that area.

thanks for any insight.

oh and also, if it isnt obvious ive never been to NC.  I'm of course planning to visit before deciding to move.

And, is the davidson considered a year round fishery?  Are there any other good C&R / (FF only) streams in the immediate area?

Jackson,

Asheville is a fantastic place to settle down.  I live just below Charlotte, NC (about an hour  and a half away), but we've considered relocating several times.

Asheville has all of the amenities of a larger city, but it isn't so developed that it has  lost its local charm.

In terms of fishing, you couldn't be more centrally located to take advantage of the fishing opportunities in North Carolina.

In addition to the Davidson (which is a year round fishery), you have the Delayed Harvest waters of North Mills, French Broad, and access to several wild streams.

Head west for 30 minutes to an hour and you're into the Smokies...there's a whole world there to explore.

Head northwest and you can fish the tailwaters of Tennesee.

Head northeast and you're into the delayed harvest and wild waters in the Linville Gorge/Wilson Creek Gorge sections of the national forest.  I spend a good portion of my time fishing this area.

If you decide to come down and visit, let us know.

C'mon down I could always use some more fishin buddies!

Asheville is a neat town/city with kind of a artsy/bohemian feel in some areas, very friendly people, blah blah blahblahblah...it's a fishermans paradise!

Lots of flyshops, with good people in all of them.  More great water than you could fish in a lifetime (seriously, people have tried)

Chris nailed all the major stuff to fish but don't forget about all the phenomenal smallmouth water.  The French Broad, Nolichucky, Little T, Pigeon the list goes on...musky eat flies too :)

Asheville is cool.  Im a blues guitar player so I like it because the music scene is really good.  Everyone is laid back.  Good food.  Everyone has touched on the fishing.  Asheville wasnt hurt that bad economy wise either.  Not sure what you do though so cant really say that for sure.  I live about an hour west of asheville.  Im partial to the fishing around me but the pisgah forest area (davidson river) is pretty country.  I will drive that way for the french broad.....and the "musky mile".  Oh yeah and highland brewing company.....
