blue lining in suburbia?
« on: March 23, 2010, 05:45:19 PM »
hey all,

I was curious what your experience has been with blue lining (finding unnamed streams on maps and fishing them) in suburbia? There are a ton of little streams in my area that run through neighborhoods and I'm curious if any of you have ever tried fishing streams like these? my county is a very interesting place. There are some places where one square mile is a little slice of the south bronx and you go two miles one way and you're in suburbia or in horse pastures. Mostly my county is suburban housing. Are there any indicators that some river has fish over another (besides actually seeing fish?)

Jordan,,, You hit the gold mine. There are miles of streams that are over looked. May be right behind a Wal-Mart or any where in suburbia. Even the guy cutting his grass right next to the stream kinda looks at ya. What the hell is he doing here they dont stock it. And your hammering wild trout left and right.

Interesting you brought it up.

Indicators. When you drive buy it in the summer. Does it have a decent flow. Does it look fertile. Are there bugs on your front bumper. And the best, driving thru a town at dusk did you ever have to turn your windshield wipers on. The bug smear. Prospect it, take a water temp in the dog days. Turn over a few rocks. You will find some jems.

Jordan in our area it depends what your looking for. If your looking for just a river with fallfish of some kind chances are all the rivers are good. If your after trout its going to have to be spring fed (not to many of them around here, but a few) or have plenty of cover and gradient to keep the water cool. I'll tell you though there are more around than people realize.

Funny Don I know a stream or two near a Walmart near us that has some brookies in it :)!

There are a lot of streams out there like this they are not perfect but they will hold a few natives.  As long as sedimentation and PH are not bad they had a chance to hold a few trout.  Also don't just fish a couple holes and give up there might only be small sections of streams that are suitable for trout.
