Cased Caddis Rock
« on: September 09, 2009, 10:22:33 PM »
I took this over the weekend when I was fishing in unproductive 80 degree temps on Sunday.  This is from a free stone stream that is just filled with nymph life in my area.  This is just one reason I love the Clarion River.  The Grammon hatch is epic!!

That is sick.  There is no river in our area with bug life like that.....anywhere.

Yikes!  I've seen rocks covered before but that's impressive.  So, I'll bet you don't carry a single cased caddis there, eh ;D

I actually read your post title and thought: "get out of my brain!!!"  I've been sitting at the tying bench trying to make some super cased caddis rock type bombs! I mean anchors to hold a aircraft carrier in place.  So far I have a size 1 Knapek Streamer hook pinched with 3 #7 Lead Shot. Next step is to gather crushed rock and tiny wood pieces for the epoxy stage.  I'll post some pics if it turns out half way decent.

Well there are campsites that is not a problem.  Part of the river runs through the Allegheny National Forest.  The river has a great Grammon Hatch, Good Sulpher Hatch,  A nice Green and Brown Drake (Brown Drakes can be epic).  Hendricksons are also very good.  Cahill's are also present.  Just about any time in May is good.  Oh did I mention that all the  above hatches bring 20" browns to the surface to feed?

We can arrange and outing next spring no problem.

How are the fish populations overall?  Does it have a closed season?  Wild?  Stocked?  Peak angler pressure time?  And what town/campground would you suggest as home base for a practice/get-together?

The upper section between Johnsonburg and Ridgway is open year round All Tackle C&R.  The fish populations are pretty good with the chances of catching a trophy brown being very good on any outing.  The peak times are May and early June but it is big water and under fished IMHO.  The majority of the trout are planted as fingerlings but trout enter the stream from the many stocked tributaries.  The upper section near the paper mill outflow is one of the more productive sections the outflow has a high PH in the low 7's that pumps a lot of nutrients into the river.  This is what accounts for the abundance of life in the upper section.  Also the East Branch of the Clarion is a tail water stream so that helps with the water temps and keeps fish kills from happening.  It is my home water and the only real problem is access which makes it hard for visiting anglers but I know just about ever legal access point and the river is navigable.  It is a great river that does not get much press.

Camping there is always the National Forest which has camp sites and you have Twin Lakes Recreation area that is on a small lake that is mostly stocked and holds trout.  It is closed till fishing season opens next year.  On the lower warm water section of the river there in Clear Creek State Park that I have a write up on here about somewhere.  It is a great camping park that is right on the river and this lower section is pretty productive for both trout and smallmouth but it is big water in this area.

I was half joking but now I want to do it.  Maybe we can pencil one in for sometime in May?
