Do You Prefer to Fish Alone or With Others?
« on: December 06, 2009, 02:51:32 PM »
I primarily fish alone (other than when I fish with my kids), as I find it challenging to co-ordinate my hectic and somewhat unpredictable schedule around/with that of other's. I also enjoy the tranquility, as well as the ability to move to waters of my choosing and fishing them for as short or long as I prefer without interfering with the desires and fishing of others. But with that being said; I do enjoy and appreciate good conversation and a few laughs during the drive and while on the water.

I find it beneficial to have a companion when I am testing and experimenting with patterns, techniques and tactics, as it allows me to gauge their level of success (more of a learning process than a competitive thing). Fishing with my sons works great in this scenario, as I often hand them my entire setup when it is working (rod, reel, line and pattern), and I switch to a completely different setup. For me, it's NEVER about who is catching more, but rather understanding and recognizing which presentations and/or pattern is more effective at that particular moment in time (makes for some very interesting journal entries)...

How about you???

Todd,

I fish alone often but that's because most of my friends don't fish! I love fishing with other people as I get to watch and learn different techniques, plus I like the companionship. I'm always looking for people to fish with! that's one of the reasons I joined this forum is to meet new friends, and enjoy our great sport.

I fish alone and I have a couple of buddies that I fish with.  Ill admit I fish enough that often catching fish is not my main goal.  I am trying to improve and learn something every time out.

I have always preferred to fish alone that is when I seem to catch my better fish and often when I learn the most.  Its nice to not have to share the water and like Todd says if you want to move there its pretty easy to do when you are fishing alone.  Also being single I don't have to be home at a certain time or call to check in.  Its amazing how many fish you can catch when you can fish all day and stay late.  Not to mention you can cover a lot of water alone if you put your mind to it.

I kind of like going with one other buddy....sometimes with a crowd we wind up chatting more than fishing - which can be fine too!

With one other person you can split up for an hour or two then compare when ya catch up. I find that fun...plus ya have someone to drink beer with.

I fish more often than not alone, by choice.  I have a small handful of close fishing buddies, and thats about the extent of it.  I spent many a year fishing with all types, and more often than not I find I prefer fishing by myself, mostly for the same reasons stated above.  Work and people give me overload sometimes, and the time on the water alone provides me with the rare chance to forget about all that other jazz and recharge the batteries.  The one guy I consistently fish with each year is my night fishing buddy Mike, and we are both on the same page when it comes to fishing.  I iive vicariously through my clients fly rods most of the year now as my personal time on the water is getting more and more scarce each year.  Mostly due to being a parent first and foremost, but also because I have found that I need not be on the water all the time as I did when I was younger, nor do I necessarily need to be the one fishing to have a good time.

Good topic Todd

I usually like to fish with one or two other people . I like when someone else is there to chat with aswell as come up with a plan for those tough days when the fishing is slow. It also gets me out of my own crazy mind.
Also driving after along day on the river sucks so having that other person can help when your falling asllep at the wheel .

Most of all though its just a good friend on the water which makes it all A-ok and fun.

Except for the couple of times I've fished with Nick and Chris and and the Thursday gig I had with my friend Ken, I fish alone.  I do enjoy fishing with others.  The good natured ribbing and the camaraderie is great.  Fishing alone is different.  Its what I do to release the stress that has built up over the days of work and the struggle of ordinary life.  I believe flowing water is medicinal, it carries off my cares and worries downstream.  When I fish alone its more about healing my soul rather than catching fish.

When are schedules allow us, I fish with my fly tying partner.  But, most of the time I fish alone.  I do alot of testing on new flies, and learning the techinque to use them.

I always find this topic interesting.

I grew up fishing alone.  Maybe my attention span has plummeted in my older age, but I really prefer to fish with 1 or 2 like minded individuals.  3 or more often becomes a bit laborious as to finding open water and moving freely, but it depends on the situation, because working in a larger "Team" format is really exhilarating.

Sometimes though there's nothing like a peaceful solo trip to replenish the soul.

I enjoy sharing the experience of the outdoors with others.
Its always a good time with my Buddy Mike. He keeps you on your toes.

Depends on the mood. There's something to be gained out of fishing with or without people. Alone you get to recollect and just focus on the fishing.
