Feathers for Fashion - Enough is Enough!!!
« on: September 03, 2011, 06:51:00 PM »
Given the recent fashion trend (thanks to Mr. Steven Tyler), the price of quality hackle has shot through the roof and they're virtually impossible to find these days. So, I've given this subject a lot of thought (especially since my 14 year-old daughter recently jumped on the bandwagon) and have finally finished my latest T-shirt design - which accurately expresses my feelings and frustration, as well as those of my fellow fly fishers...

So, who'd like to place an order for one of these t-shirts? :D

Yeah, the whole feather thing sucks right now, but imagine the deals when it goes out of style in 6 months to a year!

Beyond road kill and birds delivered courtesy of my cat, I raised birds for several years (guinea fowl, roosters, hens, ducks, quails and emus), but couldn't access birds with hackles that were of an acceptable grade (by my standards) for fine dries.

Given the shortages and demand on hackle companies, perhaps it's time to start raising them once again....

Todd, what birds produce quality dry fly hackle? And where does one purchase them?  I really know very little on the subject.

The Barred Plymouth Rock produces the best grizzly hackles. White Plymouth Rocks produce great white marabou (can be dyed to suit most colours). Here's a link to a PDF that describes the birds that they sell. Click on Catalogue and then open the PDF file:  http://www.rochesterhatchery.com/frame.html

We purchase ours from a local feed store (they're only available in the springtime). They're quite easy to raise, but you'll get what you get, as they ship them as eggs and you incubate and hatch the eggs. Rochester Hatchery's website provides some very helpful informational on how to raise chicks:http://www.rochesterhatchery.com/frame.html

Check out Ebay. Most Grizzly saddles are bringing $600+. Paid for two outings out west for me this year as well. This fad will not last long.

My better half showed up a couple days ago with three, perfect, size 18 feathers in her hair. Perfect adams material...and she says I can have them when she's done. But $20 for three feathers! I can't tell if selling capes is contributing to the problem or just cashing in on the fad while it's hot. Enablers or opportunists? What say ye?!

They are selling them in Holiday Hair's the fad is over:..........I think.  I have talked to my local fly shop who was dealing with a broker out west that was buying their feathers, and he told me the only thing they want now is black and white grizzle. Everything else is done. I sold $24 dollars of Collins hackle what the fad was good for 800 to a.salon in Australia. Lol

I made about two grand on the feathers for fashion craze. I sold all my euro hackle on ebay. I will rebuild my inventory now that the prices have dropped.
