Fishing Trip to Western NC or PA
« on: January 01, 2012, 05:36:44 PM »
Hi guys,

I'm trying to plan a trip with my father and brother to fly fish. They live in NC and I live in PA. I'm trying to decide if we should go to western NC (South western part) or  PA. If it's PA then I'd probably take them to upper Delaware/NY area.  We would use a guide for one day and fish for 2 other days by ourselves. We are tying for late May / early June for the time frame

They are both novice fly fisherman and I'm ok at it....

In NC what are some good waters in the south western area. I'm trying to determine which is "better" (I know it's a matter of opinion) but what is the  avg fish size, difficultly of fishing, wading or float required on avg, best time of year and any good guides that you could recommend....

Thanks

Rob

I live in North Ga and highly reccomend western NC. with beginners fish the Nantahala or tuckaseege Delayed Harvest water( i think thats how you spell tuckageege) its full of 10-20inch fish and you'll catch plenty with beginners (if you go ill post some of the good spots)

I would definitely recommend Western NC. Hunter pointed out 2 of the great streams here. The only problem with those two would be the time of year that you come to fish them. From the first saturday in June thru the first week in October I wouldnt bother with either of those DH Sections. Any other part of the year those streams are both unbelievable. The Tuckaseegee during this time of year up to late spring is a great river to do a float trip on.
Any time of year is great fishing in Cherokee, NC and they offer 28 miles of general water that is stocked 2 times a week and sometimes three( Not all 28 miles everytime just sections of it). Also they offer a 2.2 mile section of Catch and Release Trophy Fly fishing only section. With that section you have to have a special use trophy permit which you can get a three day for $25 dollars, plus you have to have the general water permit, 1 day $10, 2 day $17, 3 day $27. For general water you need only the general water permit.
Also dont forget if your focus is wild trout we also have the Great Smokey Mountain national park at our back door in Cherokee. Which seems like almost an unlimited amount of water to fish, if your focus is catching a stream born, wild trout. Also the Lower Nantahala is an absoluste amazing fishery. Its a tailwater stream with loads of wild fish.
The summer months also offer great smallmouth fishing on a variety of rivers. Little Tennessee, Tuckaseegee, etc.
Feel free to give Rivers Edge Outfitters a call in Cherokee (828-497-9300), they also have a shop in Spruce Pine, NC, which is another great part of western NC to fish. Cherokee focuses more on the areas I have mentioned above.
