group outing?
« on: August 12, 2009, 04:43:37 PM »
So being a member of a southeast board ( http://www.southeastflyfishingforum.com/forum ) for almost a decade and now finding this board with what seem to be similarly good people I would like to bring a southern tradition to this board.  Group camping/fishing trips…the way we did them on that board was really fun.  We had 3 big standard weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) trips every year one in May one in August and one in October.  There are other small get-togethers as well but the big ones that everyone tries to attend are the Spring, Summer and Fall ones

We get one big or several small connecting campsites and do group meals for diner on Friday and Saturday nights.  The rest of the meals you are on your own…that way if someone likes to get up early and on the water they are not waiting for the late raisers to eat B-fast.  It is byob and snacks.  Someone will volunteer to cook each dinner and someone else to clean up.  Most of the time others end up helping anyway but someone has to be the “cook”.  So once we get a final head count as to how many people are attending we can plan the meals.

I was thinking we could do one of these (or something similar) in October; either the weekend of 10/10 and 10/11 or 10/17 and 10/18.  Somewhere in between Fredonia and Westfield NY would be ideal as we would be close to 3 steel head streams and countless inland trout streams.  I am open to suggestions on camp grounds or changes in format etc.

The last one I ran was in August of ’07 and was a smallmouth trip.  We had about 65 people come (that board is much bigger than this one) here is a link to the wrap up so you can see what I am talking about:

http://www.southeastflyfishingforum.com/forum/smallie-show-my-take-t19509.html

The trips really bring the board together and build a community.  Heck I have even see some online squabbles go by the wayside over a beer around the campfire.  The ‘Net is great but there is nothing like actually talking to someone in person.

That's a great idea Thelow - thanks for throwing it out there.
Hopefully, many guys will express interest in this post and then TL can move forward with it from there.

yeah it really is a fun time!  It really doesn't have to be that many people to do even a handful will work.  Actually the 1st event that was held on that board only had a dozen or so.

Sounds super fun.  Espescially during steelhead season.  I only made it out to any of the tribs once last season.  But if there is a whole pod of people, dropping little knowledge bombs on me, I'm sure I could land my first chromer.  I am more than likely down.

That is really not all that far from the Erie Pa tribs if NY is not fishing well that may be an option.

yeah PA line is only about 45 mins or so from that area.  Also I know we will all be freakin out for the steelheads at that time but don't forget there are a lot of quality inland trout streams in that area too so if the steelie tribs are not good there is alway that option.  Like I said even a handful of guys is enough to get this going but I think one issue we may have is finding a campground that is open at that time of year.  Anyone know that area?  There must be a place open for fall camping I would assume.

This is a fantastic idea!  Count me in.  My only 2 drawbacks may be a conflict with Nationals or a guided trip.  Let me check the sched.  I'll also look into campgrounds.

DJ what weekend is nationals?  Also have you tracked down any campsites?  I found this one... Woodside Campsites at 8248 Griswold Rd, Cassadaga, NY, which would be a good location.  However when called to ask what date they close for the season a kid of maybe 8 or 9 years old answered and didn't know.  He told me to call back when his parents were home after 6pm.  Not sure if that is a good sign  :-\

No official/direct communications yet on nationals, but I took this from LorenWilliams site:
October 20-November 1: Fly Fishing Team USA National Championships; State College, PA

So, theoretically that should put us in good shape for either date - the earlier one probably being the safest.

Haven't tracked down a site yet.  My buddy Todd might know of a good place - I'll give him a ring.  Actually there's gotta be some one on this forum with some local land we could camp on, eh?

If you just google the words "fredonia campsites" - you will get a whole bunch in which some give you their actual url's. I have been asking people at work, but the general consensus is that since they live out there anyways, they don't usually rent campsites in their own backyard so they don't know.

Either way I wouldn't be able to camp on either of those weekends, however, if it does end up happening on the weekend of the 17th, I'd love to meet up and fish with the TL guys for a day.

Great Idea Thelow - It 'd be great to see faces, get actual names and meet people in person - oh yeah and the fishing would be pretty cool as well ;)

Nationals are officially now the October 24th weekend.  So, I should be able to make any other weekend.

One of our members and a good friend of mine ToddWright is actually thinking of buying his parents house and property near Springville.  If he does he's more than willing to host all these events!  But we might not be able to hang our hat on that for this one.

well that would be a great location if it pans out.  I guess we have enough interests that we need to nail down a date then.  I will put a poll up and set it up for a vote.

Put my vote in.  I am excited for this thing to happen.  I would love to meet some more people and especially soak up the knowledge.  Until then tight lines.

Guys I have emails out to the below places to see if they are open in Oct.  no word yet:

http://www.sheridanbaypark.com/
http://www.dunkirkcc.org‎

The 2nd one is really in a perfect location and they actually rent heated cabins that sleep 12... I have also asked for a price as I don't see one on the website, they maybe more than we want to pay.  However it might be nice to not have to set up and strike tents, etc if the price difference is not too bad.  Most of the time campgrounds will hit you the base price for the site plus 10 bucks or so for each "over night guest"  if that is the case and we have 10 to 12 guys we are probably looking at a total of a 125 to 150 a night for the camp site.  So if the cabin is close to that it would be worth it in my opinion... but or course we will leave that open for discussion.

This place is a little out of the way but might still be an option:

http://www.bluewaterbeach.net/

anyone have any other places they are thinking about?

here is what I got back from Sheridan Bay when I asked what date they will be open until.  I asked them to let me know what the town says:

"Oct 1st. We asked the town of sheridan about staying open longer for fisherman but have not received an answer."
