Thanks guys for the replies....Pat I have been placing my straight sighter just above my tippet lately and using a tippet ring like Alain for my tippet.  It just seemed too low on the leader but I have some confidence now that maybe it wasn't.  Also do most of you guys taper down to the sighter or just run straight mono.  I understand if you are comp fishing you have to taper but if you weren't would you taper down?

I personally don't taper anymore but was wondering if I should?  I appreciate the feedback.

Under fips-mouche comp rules you can have a level leader.  It doesn't have to be continuously tapering.  You just can't jump up in diameter on your way from fly line to point fly.

I regularly run a level 15lb mono "leader" from my fly line to sighter when I'm slinging bugs with enough weight that I don't need a tapered leader to turn them over.
