Live or Die with what you bring!!
« on: April 22, 2010, 03:33:46 PM »

How much do you bring to the river? To help cut down on me second guessing my self, I have switch to the bare minimum I have dropped the any sort of chest pack or vest, I might add a Simms waterprof fanny pack someday. Right now all I have is a stak of tippit, with gink, nipps, and sharpener on one side, a C&F chest patch and forceps on the side. A double side scientific angler water prof box and a thermometer in the from pock of my simms waders. tucked in to my waders are a bottle water a bowerbar and camera. I am finding this makes me mobile, I am also hoping that I have done my pre-planing right and should have all the flys I will need.

Hmmm...I carry as much as I can.  My vest must weight 10 to 12 lbs.  It gets hard on the back, but I have every possible thing I need.  I assume as I get more experienced, I will be able to slowly eliminate items (for example, in the winter, I now only take my nymph boxes, some tools and put them in a sling bag).

I still really enjoy my Confluence pack.  I stack up the fly palate for the day and run with it.  Sometimes with an extra box of streamers, nymphs, and/or dries.  Sometimes not.  The back pack has enough room for water, snack, license, tp, spools, extra tippet/nippers, etc.  I've tried running with just a box of flies and some tools in pockets, etc... but I'm just a bit more of a pack rat that that.  I just wish the confluence were waterproof and mostly mesh so it wouldn't hold an ounce of water!

It depends on whether I am competing, practicing or fishing recreationally (in which case I am still practicing to some degree).

I typically carry as much as I am able to carry in my Fishpond chestpack; as I feel that the extra weight is a small sacrifice to pay, in order to ensure that I have everything that I'll need with me and readily available. Practice time is the time to decide what items I'll be carrying for any given venue, but I still feel that it is important to bring along certain nonessential items and backups, which I will leave in a pack, placed nearby, high-and-dry on the riverbank.

But with that being said; during the hot summer months, I do enjoy traveling light while fishing my local streams. I often fishing with nothing but a pair of shorts; a quality fishing shirt (with plenty of pockets); a pair of felt-soled sandals; a pair of hemostats and nippers; two spools of tippet (fluorocarbon and copolymer); and a small waterproof flybox.

I had a back problem for awhile and had to get rid of the vest and pack.    Now i enjoy of the freedom of carrying as little as possible.  I use a lanyard and one big fly box and I am good to go.   Don't need no leaders or split shot or indicators. It is a very relaxing way to fish.

Mike.  Dude, I envy you.  Looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks!  You, my friend, have the essence of fishing all figured out!

I may take you to some new water this time.......

It depends on which water I am on and who I am with.  If I am on larger rivers I use a sling pack, smaller rivers I have a small orvis pack that connects to my belt.  I stopped carrying a lot when I realized that in the span of a year of fishing, there were some things that I never even touched.  C&F box of flies, three spools of fluro, nippers, hemos, a spare leader, floatant.  I'm good to go.

Two small c&f boxes.   Spool of 5x fluoro.  Camera, maybe 2 if I have the SLR.

And my rod, of course.

I carry enough, which is usually a lot.

Couple reasons for that:  First, I like to walk in pretty far.  I usually start the day with a good long walk, so I'm often a significant distance from the truck and I'm not walking back to get anything.  Second, I enjoy having the versatility to fish any way at any time --  nymphing methods, dries, steamers or wets, so I end up carrying more than it sounds that most of you guys carry.

It's mostly fly boxes, tippet and leader material but I'm also usually carrying a lunch, a drink and often extra clothing or a rain jacket.  It's how I like to fish.

I've also grown tired of trying to guess what I will need and then taking it out of my vest and into a smaller pack for the day because it seems that I usually forget something or find myself  2 miles from the truck wishing I had .010 Maxima and my monster streamer box.  Also, the transfer time back and forth just bugs me.

I just like to experiment on the stream and I want all the tools to available to me.  A couple extra pounds on my back is worth it.

You can do the "Live or Die with What You Got" thing and still have a full vest.  My nymph box is now down to a handful (ok a large handful) of patterns that I believe will cover anything.

Enjoy the day.
