Rez license price increase
« on: September 08, 2009, 10:14:18 AM »
Just a heads up... I bought my rez license on Sunday and the price is now 45 bucks.  They raised it on 9/1.  Won't effect you if you already have one that is good to December but plan ahead for next year I guess.

I don't think it makes a difference if you are a NY resident or not as this is tribal land.

Thanks for the update Thelow - that's good information but a little aggravating at the same time.

I just dropped a lot of loot ($960) on the NYS lifetime fishing, hunting, bowhunting and muzzlelaoding licenses to beat the rate increases in NY -which means I technically never have to pay to fish or hunt ever again. That being said, we do know that the Catt is a steelhead gem that can get on absolute fire and be worth every penny of the former $35 fee.

However, this spring was not as productive as usual. I say this not just pertaining to me, but as to the general consensus of some of the true die-hard guys that I have the pleasure of knowing.

The Catt didn't really settle into fishable flows and clarity until the very end of April if not the beginning of May. There are many theories out there as to why, but the one that is pretty cut and dry is that there is a ton of construction right there by Scoby Hill. This 219 project has turned out to be a nightmare with no end in immediate site, will this continue to have the negative impact on the Catt that it did this year?

With these factors to consider, paying an extra $10 is not all that appealing to me. I know that NYS probably squanders most of my money frivolously away on other governement garbage rather then conservation, but at least I am pretty confident that it is staying in NYS in some form or other. You pay for the res license, and you know for sure that the money is not being used for NYS residents in any shape or form. This is fine, I totally understand and respect Indian land and treaties. If the fee increase is for flooding cleanup, then I hope they they advertist this to license purchasers and use it properly.  If not specificlly and 100% allocated for the cleanup, to me this fee increase is an ill-timed business move and nothing more.

I work hard and long hours for my salary and the only things that I spend it on for myself is fishing and hunting (I have 4 females in my life that consume the other 98% ;D) The cost of $45 is not really not that big of an obstacle, but the question of "why" and "for what" is. Why raise it $10 in this economy? Why raise it on Sept. 1 when their season starts on Jan. 1? What else am I getting? Why would anyone pay $45 for 7 or so miles of water when you can pay $29 to fish the whole state?

I know the answer to the last question is that I get possibly some of the best fishing on sparsely crowded waters and that is what we probably all seek, but what is so different to warrant an increase in the 7th month of a 12 month season?

Will I pay $45? - I don't know. If on this forum, I find out that I am missing serious action - then I'll buy one that day. If not, then no love lost - I am sure that I can find somewhere else productive to fish in NY.

Sorry for the cynical views, but wanted to throw them out there and see if anyone wants to respond or convince me otherwise.

I think you're right on track AA!  Hopefully 100s if not 1000s of other anglers share your feelings this season.

Dejon - Are you using Jedi mind tricks on me?

Seriously, I obviously thought way to much about $10 - but I hate that the price of everything is going up while the economy is at a terrible point. The fishermen is usually a blue-collar middle class hard working guy - now he is getting hit in the things he loves on top of all the other stuff he has to deal with.

Will I pay $45 - probably - but I won't like handing over the cash >:(

But I can make it up in fish caught - which is priceless.

Double A… I don’t what is wrong with me but I took the price increase in stride.  I was going to buy 2 or 3 cigars when I was waiting on the girl to fill out the paper work but when she told me the price went up I just figured I would not buy the cigars and that would make up for it.
The thing that got me the most was that they made the switch during the season...  That was just wrong.  They should have waited until the end and increased it for the next full year.  All the other things I can over look but that is what really bothered me.
I have only fished the Catt 3 times in my entire life.  Every time I would be in town to fish it would be blown out but I figured that living here now that I would take the chance and try to fish the damn thing as much as it allows.  I will keep track of how many I catch and do a “price per fish”…lol   ::)

Guys, there's a few other ways to look at this.

1) If the Rez, including land and property was hit as hard as Silver Creek (and it must have been, right) then they have A LOT of cleanup and reconstruction to do.  We saw many dwellings condemned by the flooding in Silver Creek.  I'm not sure, but I don't think the Seneca Nation gets FIMA money.

2) $45 for a whole year.  It costs almost the same to fish a rich judges plot of land on the Salmon River for ONE DAY! And that's supposed to be a river system we own collectively as NY Citizens.  Remember, the Seneca Nation is just that - a different Nation.  Some Nations around the world won't even let you fish their waters without an expensive guide and land use fees - we're talking at least 3bills a day.

I still think we've got it pretty good.

All very valid points Dejon and I fully agree with you that at $45 is well worth if you get the chance to fish it even just a couple of times. If the increase is allocated to flood cleanup, then I totally understand and will gladly pay the extra $10.

I guess I just have to let this one go and have faith that the extra $10 for the Res license is going to flood cleanup and that the extra monies for NYSDEC licenses are indeed being used for conservation.

I don't mind paying for what I love. I just hope that the money is being used to protect and improve the outdoors I cherish and not being allocated elsewhere - becasue that wouldn't be fair to us sportsmen.

I just wanted to add - sorry for the skepticism over money and license fee structures - I also had quite a rant and rave on a previous thread regarding the NYS license fee hikes.

The Reservation is a beautiful land and truly a privelege to fish. There is a lot of pride in that Nation and I have the utmost respect and admiration for the Senecas.

I am lucky to have such great waters around me (both NYS and the Rez) and for what I pay it is well worth it. I need to stop worrying about 10 dollars and start to worry about landing more fish ;D or getting back to work >:(

price increases suck when the economy is the way it is.  Don't feel bad.
