Steelhead
« on: September 01, 2009, 01:26:06 PM »
So as you guys know i live in Western North Carolina.  Ive caught some lake run fish but with a new switch rod im ready for some steelhead action.  Here is the problem.  Ive never fished for, nor do i know how to fish for steelhead.  A friend that of mine with Bent Rod Media was talking about coming up there to catch some.  I would have a limited schedule so it would be hard to figure it out on my own.  If anybody is up for some steel fishing this fall/winter let me know.  I understand the secrecy people keep with these fish.  Im not sure what i could trade in  return being i live 10 hours away.  Hell, ill ride to the stream blindfolded lol.  If anybody is up for some fishing this winter let me know and i will try to make plans.  I dont know much about them but i can cast and i fish hard.  Thanks, you are the only NY/PA guys i really know.

Hey PB,
I haven't gone Steelheading in so long now that I hunt. I use to guide part time on the Salmon river  (Port O, Pulaski, Altmar.) I'd be happy to go again. I got a driftboat also so we can get to places others cannot.
My in-laws also have a place about 30 min from there. So lodging wouldn't be a prob.
either. Troutnut hasn't been up there in a while. Maybe we can pull him away from his busy schedule also. See you in a couple days.
Tim

pb, if you're in this area when I'm not guiding or being a family man I'd be happy to hit the stream with ya!

Otherwise, feel free to ask as many questions as you want!  There are some fantastic steelheaders on this site and I believe they'd be willing to offer up any and all information short of sending you to specific spots.

If you're a proficient inland angler... and you must be to be on the NC Team you'll probably have no problem getting into steel.  Most anglers can hit at least a few fish, often more, by just following the "bridge and dam" tour and timing their trip appropriately.

I am no expert on Steel but I have caught some here and there.  If you are up and I am free I would be happy to go with you as well.

Tim, that sounds great.  If i were say.....some dude from NC who wants to catch some steelies and or salmon.......when is absolute prime time to come up for 3 or 4 days?  Where city is your folks place in and whats the closest airport?  Are some of the other NY guys close to this?  Im down for making a weekend of it.  I can row so i dont trading stick duty.  I would drive but some plane tickets are cheaper than gas.  Keep in mind i have never caught steelies or salmon but i do have a 10 foot 7 weight and a Meiser system 8 switch rod.  Hopefully they would work.  I will realistically only have one shot this year to come up there unless i get a very big raise or hit the lottery so you will have to judge what time is best since you know the area.
